SENSE OF
THE SENATE RESOLUTION
HONORING AND THANKING DR. KHALED HOSSEINI
WHEREAS, Dr. Khaled Hosseini was born in
Afghanistan and came to the United States with his family in 1980, settling in
San Jose; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hosseini’s first novel, The Kite Runner, published in 2003,
became a worldwide bestseller; and
WHEREAS, The Kite Runner received the Alex Award in 2004 from the American
Library Association as an outstanding adult book that will also appeal to
younger readers; and
WHEREAS, The Kite Runner is a well-told story that enables readers to
also gain an understanding of the culture, geography and history of
Afghanistan, as well as the immigrant experience in California;
and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hosseini artfully depicts
the characters, locations and events in the story such that it makes readers
feel that they are actually there; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hosseini has Amir, the narrator of the story, attend
WHEREAS, Dr. Hosseini will be
on campus on March 7 and 8, 2007 as part of the SJSU Center for Literary Art’s
Major Authors series; and
WHEREAS, The Kite Runner was selected as the campus book for 2006 by the
SJSU Campus Reading Program and has been widely read and discussed by thousands
of SJSU students and employees; and
WHEREAS, Dr. Hosseini has
generously allowed SJSU Professor Matthew Spangler to write a stage adaptation
of The Kite Runner to be performed by
students in the SJSU Theater Arts program in February and March 2007; therefore
be it
RESOLVED, That we recognize and thank Dr. Hosseini
for his literary achievement and contribution to the fine arts through The Kite Runner; and be it further
RESOLVED, That we look forward to his continuing
contributions to the world of literature.
