At its meeting of November 19, 2007, the Academic Senate passed the following Sense of the Senate Resolution presented by Senator Kenneth Peter for the University Library Board.

Sense of the Senate Resolution

“Thanking the Staff of the Dr. Martin Luther King Library

For its hard work during recovery

from the Alum Rock Earthquake.”

Whereas,       On Tuesday, October 30, a magnitude 5.6 earthquake, centered a few miles east of San Jose dislodged more than 300,000 academic library books from the shelves of King Library’s 6th, 7th, and 8th floors; and

Whereas,       The next day Dean Kifer organized teams of students, staff, faculty, and administrators, joined by San Jose Public Library staff, to undertake the painstaking task of reshelving these hundreds of thousands of books; and

Whereas,       That task was accomplished in breathtaking speed, with the stacks open for use just a few days later; now, therefore, be it

Resolved,       That the Academic Senate of San Jose State University, speaking gratefully on behalf of the entire campus community, deeply thank all of those from the King Library who worked so hard to reopen the stacks in such an expeditious manner.
