At its
meeting of
SENSE OF THE SENATE RESOLUTION
HONORING AND THANKING DR. ANNETTE NELLEN FOR HER SERVICE TO THE SENATE AND
TO THE UNIVERSITY
Whereas, Dr. Annette Nellen has served as
Chair of the Academic Senate of San Jose State University for the past two
years, and
Whereas, She
has brought to the work of the Academic Senate a broad and deep knowledge of
the university, along with excellent judgment, ethical behavior, fairness,
honesty, and integrity, and
Whereas, She
served on and chaired nearly countless committees, boards and task forces; and
Whereas, On
April 27, 2005, Dr. Nellen received the Distinguished
Service Award from San Jose State University, which is the highest distinction
offered by the University President for service, and
Whereas, President
Kassing said her “distinguished record of service to
the University is exemplary”, and
Whereas, Under
the Leadership of Chair Nellen, the Senate passed a
record number of 66 resolutions, and
Whereas, She has
enhanced the collegial relationship that the Academic Senate enjoys with the
university administration, and
Whereas, She has
consistently promoted pride in our University’s history, heritage and
traditions and created a Heritage Preservation and Public History committee as
a Special Agency to the Senate, and
Whereas, She has
actively promoted a culture of reading at
Whereas, Dr. Nellen
consistently promoted open communication and sharing of information, made
herself a model of this by frequently emailing with the faculty and established the Senate
website to be an up-to-date primary source for senate related information, and
Whereas, She
was actively involved in developing a policy on Academic Integrity and
instrumental in creating the first Academic Integrity Week, and
Whereas, She
was actively involved in developing a policy on Academic Freedom and
instrumental in creating the first Academic freedom forum; and
Whereas Dr. Nellen was the driving force behind the concept of a first
year experience program, on the SJSU campus, called the Metropolitan
University Scholars Experience (MUSE), and
Whereas, She was
the first director of MUSE, a highly effective first year experience for frosh
students; and
Whereas, She
has been a strong promoter of the Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, and as a
docent has introduced countless people including many school children to the
library and its services, and
Whereas, She has initiated and led a campus-wide discussion about what
it means to be an Educated Citizen, with wide implications for all our
programs, and
Whereas, She has been a strong advocate for budget transparency and her
work with the campus administration has resulted in the creation and
institutionalization of the first Resource Planning Board, and
Whereas She has taken an active role in efforts to develop a
strategic planning process on campus, and
Whereas, She has mentored Associated Student directors and improved
their participation in joint governance, and
Whereas, She has been especially mindful to
promote principles of non- discrimination and inclusion, therefore be it
Resolved, That the Academic Senate of San Jose
State University congratulate, thank and commend Dr. Annette Nellen for exemplary leadership, and be it further
Resolved, That the leadership and members of the Academic Senate move
its work forward with the energy and commitment that Dr. Annette Nellen’s leadership has inspired.
