At its meeting of April 24, 2006, the Academic Senate passed the following Sense of the Senate Resolution presented by Senator Bros for the Professional Standards Committee.

 

SENSE OF THE SENATE RESOLUTION

              GUIDELINES

 

WHEREAS: The Professional Standards Committee requires information on the degree of consensus in the Academic Senate with respect to the four inter-connected key elements proposed in AS 1310; and

 

WHEREAS: One of the key elements in AS 1310 was the proposal to help guide our probationary faculty by creating guidelines which would better direct them in deciding which types of achievement would be considered to be scholarly, artistic or professional by their peers and what type of documentation should be supplied in the dossier to verify the achievement and assess the quality of the achievement; and

 

WHEREAS:  Individuals at the department, school or division level are likely to be the most qualified in recognizing appropriate achievements and how to evaluate them; and

 

WHEREAS:  Several other universities in the CSU system have adopted mandatory guidelines of a nature similar to that being proposed; therefore be it

 

RESOLVED: That the Senate endorses the concept of providing instructions to faculty members who will undergo a performance review and individuals responsible for reviewing the performance of that individual by the mandatory creation of department-developed guidelines which specify: 1) the types of achievements to be considered scholarly, artistic or professional, 2) the documentation required to verify an achievement has occurred, 3) the method by which a type of achievement is evaluated and 4) the documentation required to evaluate the quality of an achievement.
