Office of the Academic
Senate •
SS-S08-1
At its meeting
of February 18, 2008, the Academic Senate passed the following Sense of the
Senate Resolution presented by Senator McClory for the Executive Committee.
SENSE OF THE
SENATE RESOLUTION
Commending President Don W. Kassing
For Supporting
Commitment to
Non-Discrimination by
Suspending Campus
Blood Drives
Whereas
Whereas S01-13
states that the University "is committed to creating a diverse community
guided by core values of inclusion, civility, and respect for each
individual;" and
Whereas at this time, Food and Drug Administration regulations
prohibit gay men from donating blood because of their sexual orientation and
not because of unsafe sexual practices; and
Whereas the University understands the importance of donating
blood for the good of the community, but cannot allow blood drives on campus
because they are discriminatory and in direct conflict with University
non-discrimination policy; and
Whereas President Kassing has taken a leadership role in
reaffirming the University's commitment to non-discrimination by suspending
campus blood drives; and
Whereas in making this decision, President Kassing has exercised
great consideration and care in balancing the needs of the greater community
with the core values of the University; therefore
Be it
resolved that the Academic Senate of San
José State University support and commend President Don W. Kassing for his
courage, leadership and commitment to academic principles of equal opportunity
and respect for human dignity; therefore
Be it resolved that
