Legislative History: At its meeting of May 11, 2009, the Academic Senate approved the following Sense of the Senate Resolution presented by Senator Lessow-Hurley for the Executive Committee.
Expressing our Appreciation to Dr. Carmen Sigler
WHEREAS, Dr. Carmen Sigler has announced her retirement from a distinguished career at San José State University, and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sigler’s 22-year career at SJSU has included holding positions at every level of the University, from faculty member to Program Coordinator, Department Chair, Dean, Vice President and most recently Provost, and
WHEREAS, she has been a strong mentor, a facilitator of professional growth, an advocate for all faculty, and strong practitioner of shared governance, and
WHEREAS, her commitment to the mission of the University has included serving on numerous campus-wide organizations and committees, such as the University Planning Council, the Academic Senate, Faculty Housing Task Force, Global Studies Task Force, the joint SJSU/City library committee, budget advisory committee, accreditation steering committee, and the university curriculum committee, and
WHEREAS, her service as Interim Vice President for Advancement during a critically transitional period in 2002-03 helped refocus fundraising, public and alumni relations' efforts for years afterwards, and
WHEREAS, her numerous community recognitions and awards, including 100 Most Influential Hispanics in the USA, Women of Influence in Silicon Valley, One Hundred Most Influential Latinos in Silicon Valley, and the TWIN (Tribute to Women in Industry) Award, have brought distinction to the University, and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sigler's service extended to the California State University system level, where she provided leadership on advisory committees and task forces focused on teaching and learning and international education, and
WHEREAS, Dr. Sigler's leadership in establishing processes for continuous improvement in education is broadly recognized and specifically that she serves as member of the Board of Directors of the Western Association of Schools and Colleges; and
WHEREAS, she is a passionate supporter of the arts, serving as a trustee of the Montalvo Arts Center and Opera San Jose, and in so doing furthers both the arts and the profile of the University in that way; and
WHEREAS, she has carried out her duties with grace, hospitality, impeccable grooming and a fabulous wardrobe; therefore be it
RESOLVED, that the Academic Senate of San José State University express its heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Carmen Sigler for all that she has done for SJSU, and be it
RESOLVED, that the Academic Senate of San José State University wishes her a happy, healthy and busy retirement.
