This policy amended (subsumes) S 86-6.

Resolved, That paragraph 3 of University Policy S86-6 be amended to read as follows:
3. If there are fewer than two nominations from two different departments in a representative
unit, the ballot shall include a write-in line. If the name of a qualified person is written in, it shall
be counted as a vote for that person.
SABBATICAL LEAVE COMMITTEE: NOMINATIONS AND ELECTIONS
1. Nominees for the Sabbatical Leave Committee must be tenured members of the faculty
bargaining unit. It is desirable for the nominees to have had research experience in the writing
and administration of grants, the development of curriculum, or the completion of a sabbatical
leave.
2. Nominations shall be made by departments. Representatives to the Sabbatical Leave
Committee shall be nominated by petition signed either by a majority of the tenured and
probationary faculty of the department or by ten tenured and probationary faculty of the
department, whichever is less. The person nominated shall also sign the petition, certifying that
she/he is willing to serve if elected. More than one nomination from a department is permissible.
The Election Committee of the Academic Senate shall oversee the election and procedures will
follow those for the election of Academic Senators.
3. If there are fewer than two nominations from two different departments in a representative
unit, the ballot shall include a write-in line. If the name of a qualified person is written in, it shall
be counted as a vote for that person.
4. Members shall serve for a term of three consecutive years commencing in the fall semester
immediately following election.
5. Terms of members shall be staggered so that not more than one-third of the terms shall end in
the same year.
6. The elected faculty members of the Committee may invite a representative of the Office of the
AAVP/Faculty Affairs and the Office of the AAVP/Graduate Studies and Research to serve as
ex officio, non-voting members.
7. Elections to open seats for a full three-year term shall be held in the spring semester.
Vacancies in unexpired terms shall be filled by a special election following the same procedure
used to elect members for a full term. The special election shall commence as soon as the notice
of the vacancy is made public.
8. Application for a sabbatical Leave by a member of the Sabbatical Leave Committee
constitutes a resignation from the Committee.
9. SM-S 84-3 is rescinded.
