At its meeting of November 7, 1988, the Academic Senate approved the following Policy Recommendation presented by Bobbye Gorenberg for the Instruction and Research Committee.

This policy Supersedes S 73-12.

RESOLUTION ON NON-TRADITIONAL GRADING

F 88-6

Supersedes S 73-12.

Resolved, A, B, C, D, F, shall be the basic grading system at San Jose State University, and shall apply (except as provided below) to all course work acceptable toward a degree program; and be it further

Resolved, That Credit/No Credit grades shall be used in Theses, and be it further

Resolved, That Credit/No Credit grades may be used as recommended by departments and approved by the school in the following:

1. Field Work, and Internships,

2. Projects, Individual Studies, or Directed Reading,

3. Course credit received by challenge examination,

4. Activity and Laboratory Courses,

5. Workshops, and

6. Selected Seminars (Colloquia), and be it further

Resolved, That an upper-division student shall have the option of taking and applying to the undergraduate degree a maximum of 12 semester units outside the major, the minor and general education on the basis of Credit/No Credit for courses normally graded A, B, C, D, F.

The student shall elect this option at the registration period and may within the first four weeks of instruction change the option from Credit/No Credit to a traditional grading system, and be it further

Resolved, A, B, C, No Credit shall be used in English 1A and Junior Level Writing Workshops (100W), and be it finally

Resolved, That a student may accumulate a maximum of 60 semester units of Credit/No Credit grades toward the baccalaureate degree.
