At its meeting of November 21, 1988, the Academic Senate approved the following Policy Recommendation presented by Sandra Kajiwara for the Curriculum Committee. This revises the earlier differentiation submitted to the Senate as an information item November 23, 1987.

BA/BS DIFFERENTIATION

Bachelor of Arts

The degree designation Bachelor of Arts is reserved for undergraduate programs primarily intended to provide the student with a balanced liberal arts education, with general knowledge in a recognized discipline or interdisciplinary field of study, and with such fundamental intellectual capacities as reason and judgment. The degree is characterized by breadth (i.e., opportunities for electives outside the major) and flexibility. The Bachelor of Arts must consist of at least 124 units, 40 of which must be upper division; the major requires a minimum of 24 units, 12 of which must be upper division.

Bachelor of Science

The degree designation Bachelor of Science is reserved for undergraduate programs which provide the same general knowledge and intellectual capacities as the Bachelor of Arts degree and which, in addition, provide scientific, technical, or professional competence. The Bachelor of Science may consist of up to 132 units, 40 units of which must be upper division; the major requires a minimum of 36 units, 18 of which must be upper division.
