ACTION BY THE UNIVERSITY PRESIDENT:
"Approved and Accepted as University Policy. Effective Spring, 1990 term." Signed: Gail Fullerton, January 4, 1990.

APPOINTMENT OF ADJUNCT PROFESSORS

F89-6

California State Unlveralty policy specifies that the classification "Volunteer Employee" be used for "an individual who performs work or provides services without compensation for a quarter, semester, academic year, calendar year, session or any part thereof for the California State University system." Such a classification does not, however, preclude the use of other titles for such indlviduals who, because of their professional expertise and continuing association with and contribution to a campus, should receive recognition of special status. It is, therefore, the intent of this policy to define qualifications and procedures for awarding the title "adjunct professor."

1. The title "adjunct professor" shall be used to recognize individuals who have demonstrated scholarly, creative, or professional achievement and who have a continuing relationship with at least one department in the Univeraity through lecturing, supervision of students, directing of research, or advising on academic matters. Normally the level of achievement demonstrated shall be comparable to standards required for appointment to the rank of associate or full professor, and the responsibilities assumed shall represent some or all of those normally performed by faculty. Exceptions may be made if an individual possesses specific skills or expertise of value to a given department that may not be reflected in a typical appointment process.

2. When a department retention, tenure, and promotion committee, or the department faculty, wishes to request the status of "adjunct professor" for an individual, the department chair shall forward such a request, with a description of the person's quallfications and contributions, to the school dean for review. The dean 's recommendation and the department's documentation shall then be submitted to the Academic Vice President, who, upon determining that the appropriate level of professional distinction has been demonstrated, and that actual and potential contributions to the University warrant special recognition, shall formally issue appointment to the status of "adjunct professor" for a maximum of three years.

3. In addition to the benefits normally aasociated with the "volunteer eeployee" classification (an identification card which assures library privileges and parking permit eligibility, access to office and laboratory space when and if available, and liability coverage), an "adjunct professor" may be listed as such in the university catalog and in other department, school, or university reports and publications, and may use the title as a part of his or her own professional identification.

4. Departments with whom "adjunct professors" are affiliated shall be responsible for review of that affiliation after three years. After review, the department shall recommend reappointment, if such review determines that the continuing value of the candidate's contribution warrants the title.
