RATING SCALE: STUDENT OPINION OF LABORATORY

OR ACTIVITY TEACHING EFFECTIVENESS

S 88-5

WHEREAS, In April, 1978, the Academic Senate requested that the Student Evaluation Review Board (SERB) develop a student rating instrument specifically for laboratory and activity teaching effectiveness, and

WHEREAS, The Senate recommended that faculty attitudes be surveyed concerning the instrument, and

WHEREAS, The Senate requested SERB to make recommendations for further use of the form, be it, therefore,

RESOLVED, That, in order to provide the necessary normative data, all affected faculty will use this instrument in Fall, 1988, and Spring, 1989, for laboratory or activity teaching effectiveness in addition to the currently used lecture form, and

RESOLVED, That the results from the laboratory or activity teaching effectiveness scale will not be used in RTP procedures in 1988-1989, and

RESOLVED, That, starting Fall, 1989, the attached rating stale shall be used to gather student opinion of teaching effectiveness in all laboratory or activity classes to be evaluated, and

RESOLVED, That a progress report on this instrument will be made to the Senate by the Instruction and Research Committee in the Fall of 1989, and

RESOLVED That this instrument will be reviewed by the Senate at the end of a three year period (Fall, 1992).

You are being asked to provide your opinion regarding the effectiveness of your instructor in the behaviors listed below. Only the ratings of the class as a whole will be reported; individual student ratings will not be identifiable.

This evaluation form is designed for use in a course where laboratory, practicum, or field activities are the major part of the course requirements.

Use the rating scale below to respond to items 1-14. For each item below mark the letter you assign to that item in the appropriate space to the right of the item. Assigning an "A" to an item denotes that the instructor is truly superior and exceptional.

A = Excellent

B = Above Average

C = Average

D = Below Average

E = Far Below Average

NA = Not Applicable or No Opportunity to Observe
