S94-7 COMPETENCY IN WRITTEN ENGLISH FOR GRADUATE STUDENTS

At its meeting of May 9, 1994, the Academic Senate approved the following Policy Recommendation presented by Kenneth Peter for the Curriculum and Research Committee.

Whereas, Chancellor's Directive AA 94-15 requires that graduate students demonstrate competency in written English; now, therefore, be it

Resolved, That this policy shall be implemented in the following manner:

1. The establishment of English competency shall be a requirement of Classified Graduate students as a condition necessary for advancement to candidacy for the award of the Master's Degree.

2. Competency shall be established by:

a. Satisfactory completion of the CSU baccalaureate graduation requirement of competency in written English; or

b. Satisfactory completion as a Graduate student of the San José State University undergraduate upper division writing requirement by passing the writing workshop waiver examination or completing satisfactorily a writing workshop; or

c. Satisfactory completion of a Graduate course of at least three units in which a major report is required (such report to be valued at a minimum of thirty (30) percent of the course grade). The courses meeting this requirement shall be evaluated by the Graduate Studies Committee for the amount of writing and the level of competence required; or

d. Approval by the Graduate Studies Office of a professional publication for which the candidate was the sole author; or

e. Satisfactory completion of an upper division writing course at another university judged by the Graduate Studies Office to be equivalent in content and writing requirements to the SJSU 100W; and be it finally

Resolved, That the implementation of this policy shall begin with the fall semester, 1994.
