S98-1  Recycling Papers and Defining Plagiarism

At its meeting of February 2, 1998, the Academic Senate approved the following policy recommendation presented by Nancy Stork for the Instruction and Student Affairs Committee.

Amends: F88-10, Section 1.1

Policy Recommendation Recycling Papers and Defining Plagiarism

Whereas,    Section 1.1 of University Policy F88-10 defines cheating as "Submitting work previously
                 presented in another course, if contrary to the rule of either course" and,

Whereas,    This wording leaves unclear how such a "rule" must be established and communicated,
                 and hence is subject to diverse interpretations, therefore be it

Resolved,    That Section 1.1 of University Policy F88-10 be amended as follows:

1.0  DEFINITIONS OF CHEATING ACADEMIC DISHONESTY

1.1 CHEATING:

At SJSU, cheating is the act of obtaining or attempting to obtain credit for academic work through the use of any dishonest, deceptive, or fraudulent means.  Cheating at SJSU includes but is not limited to:

1.1.1    Copying, in part or in whole, from another's test or other evaluation instrument;

1.1.2    Submitting work previously graded in another course unless this has been approved by the course instructor or by departmental policy.

1.1.3    Submitting work simultaneously presented in two courses, unless this has been approved by both course instructors or by the department policies of both departments.
