S98-6 Amendment to Statement on Student Rights and Responsibilities

At its meeting of April 6, 1998, the Academic Senate passed the following Policy Recommendation presented by Nancy Stork for the Instruction and Student Affairs Committee.

Policy Recommendation
Amendment to Statement on Student Rights and Responsibilities
 
 

Whereas,

The University curriculum has grown more complex over the past years and similar topics sometimes appear in courses offered by different departments and,
Whereas,
Students occasionally find themselves given assignments that are the same or similar to assignments they have had in previous classes, therefore be it
Resolved,
That the following section be added to the policy "Student Rights and Responsibilities" (S90-5) under the heading "II. Student Rights and Responsibilities in the Classroom:"
 
I. When an instructor assigns a project that is the same as one previously or simultaneously done by the student in another class, the student and instructor(s) are encouraged to work together to devise a new assignment that will build on, rather than duplicate, the previous or simultaneous assignment. (See San Jose State Policy on Academic Dishonesty, F88-10,. Section 1.1.2)
 
Resolved,
That the Student Rights and Responsibilities policy S90-5, as amended by this policy, be printed each semester in the Schedule of Classes and disseminated through the SJSU website.
