At its meeting of January 31, 2000, the SJSU Academic Senate passed the following Sense of the Senate Resolution presented by Jonathan Roth for the Executive Committee.

SENSE OF THE SENATE RESOLUTION

NOT FLYING STATE FLAGS INCORPORATING THE CONFEDERATE FLAG AND HONORING THE NAACP BOYCOTT OF SOUTH CAROLINA

Whereas: It is the custom at San Jose State University to fly the flags of the fifty states at graduation ceremonies, and
Whereas: The Confederate Flag, also known as the "Confederate Battle Flag," is a symbol of racism and segregation, and
Whereas: The Confederate Flag represents ideas offensive to the principles of equality and integration that San Jose State University stands for as an institution.
Whereas: the Confederate Flag is incorporated into the state flags of Georgia and Mississippi and
Whereas: The Confederate Flag flies over the State Capitol of South Carolina, and
Whereas: The NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) has called for a boycott of South Carolina until the Confederate Flag no longer flies over its State Capitol.
Therefore, be it resolved,
That San José State University not fly the flags of Georgia and Mississippi at its graduation as long as the Confederate Flag remains incorporated in them, and

That San José State University not fly the flag of South Carolina at graduation or any university event as long as the Confederate Flag flies over its State Capitol, and

That the senate recommend to staff, faculty and students that they honor the NAACP boycott of South Carolina avoiding the attendance of conferences and travel to that state with respect to University business, and

That a copy of this resolution be sent to the Statewide Academic Senate, Governors and State Legislatures of Georgia, Mississippi and South Carolina, and to the National NAACP.
