SS-S99-2
At its meeting of February 1,1999, the San Jose State University Academic Senate approved the following Sense of the Senate Resolution presented by Kenneth Peter from the floor of the Academic Senate.
SENSE OF THE SENATE RESOLUTION
REQUESTING FORMAL
RECOGNITION OF A
TRANSIT, TRAFFIC AND PARKING ADVISORY COMMITTEE
| Whereas, | A University Police Department Alternative Transportation and Parking Advisory Group ("The Group") was formed in response to various Chancellor's orders (especially ABS 86-17, section 3a) dating from 1973; this group, presently consisting of two faculty, one student, three staff/administrators, one vanpool representative, one representative from Facilities Development & Operations, two University Police Department officers, and one representative from Disabled Resources, has remained in existence despite the elimination of the centralized orders that mandated its existence; The Group does meet from time to time and performs useful service by advising the University Police on various parking and traffic matters; and |
| Whereas, | The Group is virtually unknown to anyone on campus outside of itself and the University Police; i.e., upon first inquiry neither the Office of the President nor the Office of the Vice President for Administration nor the Office of the Academic Senate was aware of its existence, nor is it listed in the Academic Senate Handbook; this very low visibility deprives the University Community of a logical place to turn with traffic or parking related suggestions and comments; and |
| Whereas, | There will be an increasing need for excellent communications related to transit, traffic, and parking as the University implements a variety of construction-related parking changes over the months and years ahead; now, therefore, be it |
| Resolved, | That the Senate requests that the President issue a Directive formalizing and clarifying the membership and charge of a Transit, Traffic, and Parking Advisory Committee; be it further |
| Resolved, | That the faculty members of this committee should be appointed in accordance with Senate By-Law (12.2.a), as is required for all appointments to presidential task forces, advisory committees, and commissions; be it further |
| Resolved, | That the charge of such a committee should be broadly defined to include advising on the improvement of transit, traffic, and parking conditions on and around campus and also the facilitation of communication between those who use public transit, campus streets, and parking and those who enforce traffic and parking laws; be it further |
| Resolved, | The existence of the committee should be widely publicized and named in the Academic Senate Handbook, among other places. |
