EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE MINUTES

September 25, 2006

 

Present:          Lessow-Hurley, McClory, Najjar, Phillips, Hebert, Thames, David, Van Selst, Bros, Sigler, Meldal

 

Absent:            Gutierrez, Lee, Kassing, Veregge

 

1.   The consent calendar was approved as is.

 

2.   The chair asked for a volunteer to present AS 1336, Sense of the Senate Resolution, In Support of Associated Students 2006 Campus-Wide Voter Registration Drive (Final Reading), to the Senate.

 

3.  The Executive Committee discussed the need to have any substantive changes reported to the Senate on a routine basis.  The Provost will remind Deans of this requirement at their retreat.  Chair Lessow-Hurley will bring this up at the Senate meeting today and have it made a matter of record.

 

4.   The Executive Committee was informed that a policy on standardized web pages for the university may be coming to the Senate at the October 23, 2006 meeting.

 

5.   The Vice Chair gave an update on the Senate Retreat.  There will be two speakers, Ken Peter and David Elliott.  Suggested reading before the retreat includes: Notes On The History of The Academic Senate at San José State University, by Senator Ted Norton.

 

6.  The VP of University Advancement gave an overview of the Capital Campaign. 

 

7.  The Executive Committee discussed and approved Rona Halualani as the SJSU nominee for the CSU Plan to follow Cornerstones.

 

8.  The Executive Committee discussed the procedure to solicit Campus Nominees for CSU Faculty Trustee.   The Senate Administrator provided the Executive Committee with copies of what was done in the past.  The Chair will review this information and report back at the next meeting.

 

9.  The Executive Committee discussed vacant Senate seats.  The Chair reported that the vacant seats in the Colleges of Business and Humanities and the Arts have been filled.  This leaves one vacant seat for the College of Social Sciences.

 

10. The Executive Committee discussed the implications of sustainability, an issue that has been raised by several new faculty.  There was discussion about ways the issue might be brought to fore.  Chair Lessow-Hurley will encourage interested faculty to bring the issue to the campus dialogue.

 

11.  The Executive Committee discussed inviting Trustee Jeff Bleisch to SJSU.  Provost Sigler will bring this up at the next President's staff meeting.
