Course Title:

 

ESE1001: Introduction to College Reading and Composition

Units & Cost:

 

1 semester unit (16 class hours) - $182 without a fee waiver

Description:

 

This rhetoric-based course introduces students to the demands of college-level expository, analytical, and argumentative reading and writing. Students will study the relationships between authorial purpose, structure, and intended audience; types and use of evidence; the impact of rhetorical strategies; and the social, political, and philosophical assumptions that underlie the text. Students will receive feedback on their writing in every class.

Advancement: 

 

SJSU students will have the opportunity to select their fall English class through a Directed Self Placement exercise included in this course.

Best For:

 

San Jose-area students who are looking for a one unit course to satisfy their Early Start English requirement. 

 


Course Title:

 

ESE1003: Introduction to Analytical Writing

Unit & Cost:

 

1 semester unit - $182 without a fee waiver

Description:

 

Using an online tool called Calibrated Peer Review, students will write an analytical essay, learn a set of standards for evaluating analytical writing, evaluate essays written by their peers, and revise their own writing. Students are expected to spend 10-15 hours on this course, and there will be daily deadlines for submitting work. 

Advancement: 

 

This course satisfies the Early Start requirement in English but does not provide an opportunity to improve freshman English placement.

Best For:

  This course is intended to give students with very little free time or limited transportation options the opportunity to fulfill the Early Start English requirement. Only students who will be attending CSU campus other than SJSU may enroll in ESE1003. SJSU students who need an online class must enroll in ESE1004 instead. 

 


Course Title:

 

ESE1004: Preparing for College Writing

Units & Cost:

 

1 semester unit - $182 without a fee waiver

Description:

 

ESE 1004 is an online course designed to help students explore the demands and uses of college-level reading and writing. Through a series of integrated assignments, students assess their own preconceptions about what college-level reading and writing will demand, test those assumptions against actual reading and writing exercises, and survey their experience to deliberate their readiness for college-level work. As a culminating experience, students will assemble a portfolio of their work that will serve as a benchmark for choosing their first-year composition course.

Advancement: 

 

Students will have the opportunity to select their fall English class through a Direct Self placement exercise included in this course.

Best For:

  This course is intended for students who will be attending SJSU in the fall but do not live in the San Jose area. Local students should select ESE 1001. Student who will be attending a campus other than SJSU in the fall should select ESE1003.
