Applying for Graduation

5 Simple Steps to Apply to Graduate

Please follow the steps below to apply for graduation.

Step One: Print Required Documents Below

All students requesting signature from the chair need to bring the following documents along with the completed form:

  • "My Academics" Homepage
    (via account - print screen to show current degree plan(s) and academic standing)
  • Course History Report
    (via account - via MyAcademics)
  • Unofficial transcripts from SJSU
  • Unofficial transcripts from previous college(s)
    (If credits already transferred, print a copy of the "Transfer Credit Report" from via MyAcademics)

Step Two: Get the forms

There are at least two forms required when you apply to graduate. The first is the application for graduation, and the second is the Major Contract. The application for graduation basically says that you intend to graduate by a specific date, which you put on the form. The Major Contract is where you list the courses you have taken up to now, and the courses you intend to finish by your graduation date, in order to fulfill the requirements for the major.

The forms are only available online. WE DO NOT GIVE THESE FORMS OUT AT THE SOCIOLOGY OFFICE. You will find the forms at:

If you have a declared minor, you are required to complete a Minor Form as well and submit it along with your application for graduation packet. Please obtain this from your minor department before Step Three.

Step Three: See an Advisor

Before you can submit your graduation application, you must see one of the major advisors to have them review your Major Contract and sign it.

Step Four: Get the Approval of the Department Chair

Once your Major Form has been signed by an advisor, bring the Major Contract and the graduation application, with your required documents to the department office at DMH 241. Please allow 3-5 business days for processing your paperwork. We will contact you when your paperwork is ready for pick up. If you prefer, we can walk over your originals to the Office of the Registrar, where your Graduation Evaluator will generate a graduation worksheet with your outstanding requirements and email out to you.

We will have copies of your forms waiting for you in the Sociology office. Make sure to come and get them, and to keep them safe, because they can help you in the event that anything goes amiss.

Step Five: Follow up with Graduation Evaluator at Office of the Registrar in about 3 months.

Your graduation evaluator at the Office of the Registrar should be sending an email to you within about 3 months from the time you submit your application. This email will include your graduation worksheet with your outstanding university graduation requirements. If you do not receive your graduation worksheet, email your graduation evaluator.


Graduation Application Deadlines

If you apply for graduation by the deadline you may be eligible for up to two semesters of priority registration. See deadlines below:

If you missed a deadline apply as soon as possible. Applying late may delay the processing of your Graduation Application.
