Dr. Deanna L. Fassett became Chair of the Department of Communication Studies in January 2014. During the 2016–2017 academic year she is serving as the Chair of the College of Social Sciences’ Council of Chairs. In this role Dr. Fassett liaises between the college’s 12 department chairs and the college’s three full-time managers: Dean Walt Jacobs, Associate Dean Ron Rogers, and College Academic Resources Manager Karel Floyd.

Dr. Fassett is a Professor of Communication Pedagogy, and has been on the faculty at SJSU since 2000. Her research interest is critical communication pedagogy, which explores social justice approaches to the instruction of communication and of communication in instruction. Dr. Fassett has served as the Department of Communication Studies’ Graduate Teaching Associate Supervisor since 2002.

Dr. Fassett received her M.A. and Ph.D. (1996, 2000) in Speech Communication from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale. She received a B.A. in Communication from the University of California at San Diego (1995).
