News Item: Presentation of CoSS Faculty Awards

Meritorious Service Award Recipient: Emi Nobuhiro
For this award, the Department Chairs of the College selected a staff member who, through distinguished service, has provided leadership in advancing the interests of the college.

Warburton Award of Merit Recipient: June Anne English-Lueck
Endowed by Austen D. Warburton, this award recognizes a faculty member within the College who has achieved the highest level of scholarship, as demonstrated by an outstanding record of publications and the delivery of scholarly papers before prestigious professional organizations. The person's achievements should be worthy of international or national recognition, with significant impact upon a field of scholarship in the Social Sciences.

Outstanding Professor: June Anne English-Lueck (Anthropology)
The Outstanding Professor Award is one of the two most prestigious faculty awards presented on the campus. The award is based on outstanding teaching, professional involvement, and community work.

News Item: Faculty Presentations and Conferences

Carol C. Mukhopadhyay, professor of anthropology, recently delivered an invited presentation on "Are Western Theories of Gendered Science Extendible to the Indian Context?" at an international conference on Women In Science in New Delhi, India. Mukhopadhyay’s travel to the conference, organized by the National Institute of Science, Technology and Development Studies, Government of India, was funded by the Indo-Us Forum. Assistant economics professors Benjamin Powell and Edward Stringham recently co-authored a report on affordable housing for Los Angeles-based think tank Reason Foundation. The report is the first empirical study of inclusionary zoning and is generating considerable national news coverage. Peter Chua, assistant professor of sociology, recently delivered an invited presentation on "Globalizing Sexualities, Sexing Global Project" at the conference on Sex, Race and Globalization at Tucson. This Rockefeller Foundation-funded conference was organized by the Committee on LGBT studies at the University of Arizona. Contact Chua at pchua@sjsu.edu.

Constantine Danopoulos, assistant professor of Political Science, presented a paper on personal security and the role of the military in Latin America at a conference in Kingston, Jamaica. News Item: New Faculty Authored Books

Political Science professors Larry Gerston and Terry Christensen have co-authored Recall! California's Political Earthquake, published by M.E. Sharpe Inc., 2004. Assistant Professor Andy Wood's new travel book, Motel America: A State by State Tour Guide to Nostalgic Stopovers, follows his famous Road Trip America Book. Wood's best-seller co-authored textbook; Online Communication: Linking Technology, Identity, and culture; has been  revised for second edition, and his co-edited book, Survivor Lessons: Essays on Communication and Reality Television was published last fall by McFarland and company. Maria Ochoa, Social Science lecturer, has authored Creative Collectives: Chicana Painters Working in Community, published by the University of New Mexico press. Ochoa presents a blend of art history, social analyses and personal testimony for a new paradigm to understand Chicana/o studies.

History website unveiled: History San Jose will roll out Silicon Valley's first multi-institutional history web site with a presentation at the King library on Thursday, March 25th, at 10:00 a.m., in the Special Collections program room on the fifth floor. The event will feature seven public and private organizations involved in the project, including SJSU, Santa Clara University Archives, California History Center at DeAnza College and the Intel Museum. News Item: International News Update

SJSU recently signed an official student exchange agreement with Institut d'Etudes Politiques de Lille in Lille, France, a premier institute for political science/international relations, reports Sharyl Cross, Chair of the political science department. "SJSU students will benefit from immersion in the outstanding international academic environment provided by the institute," says Cross. "The proximity of this partner institution to Paris and Brussels offers attractive internship opportunities in European international governmental institutions. We very much look forward to the first Institut d'Etudes Politiques-SJSU exchange of students during the 2004-2005 academic year," she says. College of Social Sciences Dean Albert Agresti and Political Science Professor Cobie Harris participated in the agreement-signing event.
