A special SJSU June program in Buenos Aires, Argentina
As the capital of Argentina, Buenos Aires offers a heady blend of traditional European culture, combined with a fusion of indigenous culture, fed by increasing immigration from the interior of Argentina, Bolivia, Paraguay and Peru. It is a fantastic, energized beehive of cultural, social experimentation, experiencing a renaissance of venerable institutions as the tango, a flourishing and sophisticated art scene, educational and cutting edge experiments in labor ownership and Latin American cosmopolitan life. Buenos Aires is the political, economic, educational center of Argentina, a world class, complex and cosmopolitan metropolis offering an array of significant cultural sights, as well as a fascinating laboratory to understand human rights and social justice’s issues in Latin America. Must see focal points include the world-renowned Teatro Colon, the Casa Rosada, (Presidential Palace), the Recoleta Cemetery (burial place of Eva Peron.)
The words Buenos Aires mean “good airs”. Buenos Aires is one of the world's most sophisticated and complex cities. Over thirteen million people live there.
In December of 1990, the Ministry of Education and Justice authorized the University of Palermo; its first classes began in 1991. Since then, the University of Palermo (UP) has been characterized by its dynamic growth and its pursuit of academic excellence. At the present time, the UP offers degrees in multiple disciplines, is organized in six Faculties and several interdisciplinary Schools and special programs. It is located in a safe, middle/upper middle class neighborhood of Buenos Aires and is today one of the most dynamic institutions of Argentina’s university system with a particular urban focus.
The San Jose State School of Social Work offers this course and all participants must take the following three unit course:
SW 285/185 is 3-credit hour course focusing on Argentina’s recent social and political history, its current human rights climate and the challenges facing those working in the context of social justice. It is especially relevant for students {upper division or graduate} in social work, anthropology, history, global studies, Latin American studies, public health, social science, sociology, communications studies, psychology, and occupational therapy among others. It includes lectures, field trips, museum tours, guest lectures, documentary films, and excursions. There will also be a conversational Spanish course offered although no prior Spanish is required.
The course is intended for upper division and grad students.
No prior knowledge of Spanish required.
This course focuses on current social justice and human rights as well as social history and culture of Argentina This educational/cultural experience will be centered on the city of Buenos Aires as well as the recent history of the country with its military dictatorship, the ‘disappearance’ of 30,000, the courageous Madres del Plaza de Mayo, its return to democracy in 1983 and its economic crisis in 2002.
Buenos Aires is a large city with good sanitation and public health services. Students will stay with families in the middle class barrio (neighborhood) of Palermo, which gives its name to our host university, the University of Palermo... Safety and security are quite adequate, but normal precautions for living in a large city will be stressed. We will register the group with consular agencies in Buenos Aires.
