CETLALIC, in Cuernavaca,
Mexico. In addition to learning Spanish,
program participants learn about
cultural, political, educational,
and health issues affecting Mexicans.
CETLALIC have 20 years of experience providing intensive
Spanish
instruction combined with the study of social and political
issues.
In addition to already scheduled special
programs, we also work with groups who would like to come to CETLALIC to study
Spanish together and study a particular aspect of Mexican culture, politics,
or
social issues. I personally work directly with the group in advance
to
design a program that meets its needs and interests. Programs
include
excursions, lectures and round-table discussions with local
community people
who are active on the particular issue. Homestays
with Mexican families are

For the past 12 years, the School of Social Work with support from the family of Dorothy Miller, has sponsored an event to recognize achievements in field education, including outstanding field instructor (BASW or MSW field program), outstanding MSW student in the field, and outstanding agency (BASW or MSW field program). Since its inception, the event has evolved to include recognition of outstanding MSW research projects, and an Open House to publicize our School. This year, we are also increasing the recognition given to BASW students. The committee planning this year's event needs your help:
1) Suggestions for Event Name.
Please suggest what we can name this event. The event has been called the "Dorothy Miller Field Education Symposium, Outstanding Research Awards, and Open House." However, although the field scholarships will still be in her name, the event itself is not currently funded by the Miller family.
2) SAVE THE DATE.
We ask that all faculty support this event since it is a great opportunity to recognize students, to show our appreciation to our colleagues assisting us in the field education program, and to represent our School and profession to community partners and leaders. This year's event will be on Wednesday May 16th at the School of Social Work, most likely in the late afternoon through early evening.
3) Suggestions for Keynote Speakers.
Please suggest dignitaries and/or significant figures who can address our audience of faculty, students, and colleagues in the field and community. This person does not have to be a social worker, but should be a "social worker at heart" with significant interests consistent with our mission.

Dear Students Preparing for 2nd Year of Field and for ScWk 298,
As you prepare for your final year of internship, keep in mind that your studies and experiences in this advanced, multi-systems portion of the social work curriculum will be more focused on the your field of practice. Your ScWk 298 project is also part of your final year and is almost always linked to your field practicum. i.e., you will use your agency and experiences there to formulate and complete an independent research project related to your professional and educational interests. Additional details will be sent soon regarding ScWk 298 andhow to prepare for it. However, as part of your search for an internship, consider ScWk 298 in context, especially (1) how the agency, the FI, and other agency staff will support your research interests, and (2) what type of institutional review board (IRB) procedures are involved at that agency. For example, many hospitals, organizations, and government offices have their own IRB requirements in additional to the university's, which you should be aware of as you make your decision. Although IRB procedures are somewhat anxiety provoking, your professors and I will give you as much support as possible to help you succeed.

Hello Students,
The SJSU campus forum committee invites you to the final
WASC forum on Wednesday 2/21, 12-1:30 in the Barrett Ballroom. Lunch will
be provided. We're in the very last phase of the university's
re-accreditation review process (educational effectiveness
review) and the team visit will take place March 7, 8, 9. A brief
update on our status along with materials relevant to the team's visit will be
provided, however, the focus of the forum will be
looking forward. The time is right for using what we've learned
during the WASC review along with what we've learned from the strategic planning
process as a springboard to move forward collectively. The
format will be small group discussions around these topics related to the

Please remember to do the following:
1) Application for Award of Master's Degree form is DUE FEBRUARY 15, 2007--Please DO NOT send this form to me; it should be sent directly to the Graduate Studies and Research office. The instructions are on that form. If you have not received notification of a successful advancement to candidacy from the Graduate Studies and Research office, you should contact me asap. You would have received that notification by the end of December 2006.
2) Request for Course Substitution in Master's Degree
Program form--Please submit this one to me asap if you are
substituting one elective for another. It is best to wait until after your Spring 2007 schedule
is
finalized, but once you know your classes,
file this form asap if it applies to you.
If you are taking an EXTRA course (i.e., another elective beyond the required 60
units for MSW), you do NOT need to file this form to report that extra class.
3) Review your MSW Student Handbook--Please read your handbook for tips on how to complete your
degree and to re-familiarize yourself with the common
reasons for delays in attaining
your MSW. This may save you heartache
later.

HELLO EVERYONE!
First, I would like to commend all of the organizers and
participants in the Bridging the Gap event. Over 400 students met with over 60
agencies, potential employers/internships. Good job
everyone!!!
I want to take this
opportunity to update you about new developments in regards to graduation. As
everyone should know by now, our graduation will be held at on Saturday, May
26th at 2pm at San Jose's Convention Center, Parkside Hall. At this point we
have had two periods in which all graduates were able to buy unlimited tickets,
on a first come, first serve basis.
Many people have asked when they can pick up their tickets.
The Graduation Committee has been working hard. However, at this time, the
tickets have not yet been printed. But no worries, your checks and money orders
serve as a great receipt. We also have a documented list of the buyers and
number of tickets purchased. Please stay tuned to the email list-serve to find out when and where to pick up your
tickets.
SWGSA and the Graduation Committee agree that our graduation
ceremony is very significant in our lives, as well as in the lives of our family
and friends. Therefore, this ceremony is very significant. To that end, we want
to help enable all graduates to participate in the ceremony to the best of our abilities and with our limited
resources.
Please remember that our graduation ceremony is put on by
US, graduate and undergraduate students, COLLECTIVELY. Student
organizers/participants are volunteering their time, talent, and care in an
effort to put on a wonderful ceremony, while simultaneously working to graduate.
So, if you have any ideas, issues, etc., please remember YOU are always invited
to participate in the Graduation Committee (which meets the first Monday of
every month @ noon in the social work office) to make your
contribution.
That said, the Graduation
Committee met last Monday, and discussed the next steps to sell more tickets.
First we must finalize the tally of graduate and undergraduate tickets already sold and work with
the
Convention Center to arrive at the
maximum space available. At the next ticket sale, which will be advertised
through the email list serve, in the spirit of inclusion, we will give priority
to those who have not bought any tickets yet with a limit based upon the number
of available tickets. Please stay tuned to the email list serve to learn of this
next ticket sale.
If you
have NOT purchased tickets, but would like to, please email Erika Martinez, the Graduation Committee Chair, @ emartinez823@yahoo.com, and
tell her the number of tickets you would like to purchase. Keep in mind, we are
doing our best, and the success of putting on this event includes YOU!
Lastly, the next monthly SWGSA

ScWk 245: Management in Human
Services
This seminar course will engage students in reading, research, and discussion on the following range of human service management topics:
- A survey of management theories;
- Review of administrative functions and challenges;
- Consideration of the role of leadership;
- Review of the necessary skills in human service management;
- Consideration of financial issues and challenges; and
- Strategies for change and cultural diversity.
Kevin McGirr, the instructor for this course, has over 30 years experience managing substance abuse, mental health and homeless services in non-profit and county administration.
ScWk 285: Social Work and Social Problems
This course examines the economic, political, social, and cultural factors operating at the local, national, and global levels that serve to generate and maintain challenges for disenfranchised, oppressed, and marginalized groups. It will provide a framework for critically analyzing and understanding the intercultural, intracultural, psychosocial, social, and political factors, and ethical considerations that serve to maintain and promote marginalization, and suggests transcultural social work methods of practice for appropriate service delivery with special population groups such as Latinos, Asians and Pacific Islanders, African American, and sexual minorities. The course will also highlight social services to immigrants and refugees, emphasizing cultural and cross cultural issues, immigration policies, and social work knowledge and practice.
