Framework
Now you can develop your social work skills within the context of
working with Spanish-speaking clients and Latino client systems. Social
Work 224 "Advanced Generalist Social Work Practice: A Spanish/English Framework"

ScWk 245: Management in Human Services
This seminar course will
engage students in reading, research, and discussion on the following range of
human service management topics:
- A survey of management theories;

Review of administrative functions and challenges;
- Consideration of the
role of leadership;
- Review of the necessary skills in human service
management;
- Consideration of financial issues and challenges; and

Strategies for change and cultural diversity.
Kevin McGirr, the instructor
for this course, has over 30 years experience managing substance abuse, mental
health and homeless services in non-profit and county administration.
ScWk 285: Social Work and Social Problems
This course examines the
economic, political, social, and cultural factors operating at the local,
national, and global levels that serve to generate and maintain challenges for
disenfranchised, oppressed, and marginalized groups. It will provide a framework
for critically analyzing and understanding the intercultural, intracultural,
psychosocial, social, and political factors, and ethical considerations that
serve to maintain and promote marginalization, and suggests transcultural social
work methods of practice for appropriate service delivery with special
population groups such as Latinos, Asians and Pacific Islanders, African
American, and sexual minorities. The course will also highlight social services
to immigrants and refugees, emphasizing cultural and cross cultural issues,
immigration policies, and social work knowledge and practice.

SJSU School of Social Work Mental Health Initiative Program Criteria of Eligibility to Apply:
For those interested in applying for the MHIP Program and the stipend, please read the following:
Applications will be available for the Mental Health Initiative Program in late April. In the meantime, interested students must fit the following criteria in order to apply:
- 3.0 GPA or higher
- Currently in the SJSU SSW's Health/Mental Health Area of Specialization
- Must obtain a placement in a county mental health department or in a county mental health department funded mental health contract agency.
- Willing to commit to completing one full time year of employment in a county mental health department or in a county mental health department funded mental health contract agency upon graduation. If unable to find employment locally within a 120 day time frame, this would mean that you would be willing to move somewhere in the state of California to complete this requirement. I am hoping to get this time frame increased to 180 days, but there are no guarantees on this. Currently for the first 60 days you must seek employment within a 60 radius of your residence.

Lobby Days - We will have a representative from the State Chapter presenting on the bills in Sacramento that we as social workers will be focusing on. We will be discussing student scholarships for those interested in attending lobby days.
Remember, the local unit of NASW – CA has a limited number of scholarships available for students to attend Lobby Days. Funds can cover registration and/or hotel expenses. If students need financial assistance in order to attend Lobby Days, they can find out more about these scholarships and how to apply for them at this meeting.
Social work students are encouraged to attend our meeting. We will provide food and good networking!

Congratulations! You are almost finished! Earning your MSW is just around the corner. A few reminders:
1) Review your MSW Student Handbook
Please read your handbook for tips on
how to complete your degree and to re-familiarize yourself with the common
reasons for delays in attaining your MSW. This may save you heartache
later.
2) Application for Award of Master's Degree form is DUE FEBRUARY 15,
2007
Please DO NOT send this form to me; it should be sent directly to the
Graduate Studies and Research office. The instructions are on that form.
If you have not received notification of a successful advancement to candidacy
from the Graduate Studies and Research office, you should contact me asap.
You would have received that notification by the end of December 2006.
3) Request for Course Substitution in Master's Degree Program form
Please
submit this one to me asap if you are substituting one elective for
another. It is best to wait until after your Spring 2007 schedule is
finalized, but once you know your classes, file this form asap if it applies to
you. If you are taking an EXTRA course (i.e., another elective beyond the
required 60 units for MSW), you do NOT need to file this form to report that
extra class.
4) ScWk 287 - Substance Abuse Course - 1 unit
If you enroll in ScWk 287,
remember that it is worth 1 unit, NOT 3 units. You do NOT need to file a
course substitution form if you are adding this class. Although it will
appear on your SJSU transcript, MAKE SURE you did not report this class on your
official candidacy form, as it will confuse the university reviewers and delay
your graduation.

The Bay Area Training
Collaborative is hosting an internship fair at Seneca Center in San Leandro on Thursday, February 1, from 10:00am
-1:00pm.
The fair will be open house
style - students & graduates can drop in any time they are able to during
that timeframe. There will be representatives from at least 9 Bay Area Community
Mental Health Treatment Agencies (of which Rebekah
Children's Services will be one) available to discuss internship opportunities with your
students/graduates.

Thank you all for your support of Bridging the Gap. The representatives from the agencies also thank you for your participation. They came to see YOU, and were very impressed by your enthusiasm and interest in social work. There were 60 participating agencies this year, and over half-dozen on the waiting list. Next year, we hope to grow the event even more.
A special thank you to the Bridging the Gap student planning committee and all the volunteers. We also appreciate the Career Center and its staff, who were invaluable in helping us host this event. From this event, we hope you all were able to gain something beneficial for your personal and professional growth.

Hello Everyone!
Hope you are well! I am
just giving you a reminder to attend the MANDATORY Bridging the Gap event, on
Tuesday, JANUARY 23, 2007 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. This year over 60 agencies will
be present. This is the highest number of attending agencies ever. So, bring
your resumes and get ready to investigate and network for either potential near
future employees and/or internships. Also, even if you are not currently
in need of a job or don't find the exact agency you are interested in, this is a
great opportunity to see what else is happening in our profession.
***Remember, this is a special and important event that SWGSA (US!), the School of Social Work, and the Career Center has worked hard to put on, just so that you can benefit! Student Union Ballroom. So, if you want family, friends, loved ones see you walk
that stage…. you must attend Bridging The Gap and come to the Graduation
Committee table and purchase your tickets @ $12 a ticket!!!
Lastly, the Graduation Committee is exploring selling T-Shirts to
raise money for our graduation as well as to have them ready for Lobby Days.
Presently, we are working with a volunteer artist, but we need your input for
concepts, themes and if you are an artist, heck, we are still open to the
design! Please come and give your input about the T-Shirts ASAP because we will
have to have the top three designs finalized at the next Graduation Committee
meeting on February 5th, and the ultimate design voted on by SWGSA on Monday,
February 12th.

Hi all,
I hope you have had a few more days to rest before resuming classes. A few students have contacted me regarding some confusion about registering for Bridging the Gap and also for the Career Center. Hope this explanation helps.
BASW and MSW students are required to attend, and there is no pre-registration with the School required. Just come. Students will register on the day of the event (January 23rd) and on-site. However, registration for attending Bridging the Gap is different from registering with the Career Center. To benefit from previewing, downloading, and printing agency and employment information, and to benefit from the Career Center job services, you must register with the Career Center. I have copied below a portion of a message from MSWMail just received re instructions (please see end of my message).
I understand that there are many things going on with you all. The student organizations and the School have put in great efforts to enhance your professional and educational opportunities via Bridging the Gap. Thank you for your support, and I look forward to seeing you there.

GRADUATION CEREMONY UPDATE & NEXT TICKET SALE!
HAPPY NEW YEAR ALL!
As we start the new year of 2007, those who will be graduating in May are already thinking about our graduation ceremony. I would like to provide updates about graduation, the next time for ticket sales, and information on the Graduation Committee.
Last semester SWGSA created a survey about your preferences on the date of the graduation, location of ceremony, and indoor/outdoor setting. We widely distributed this survey through MSWMail and at orientation. In addition, SWGSA representatives made announcements in numerous classes, and passed out and collected surveys. (Thank you everyone who helped with this!)
The majority of students voted for an indoor graduation ceremony on the date of Saturday, May 26th. This is the same day as the main SJSU graduation ceremony, so you can attend both! In the spirit of democratic participation, the people (students) spoke, and SWGSA listened! Therefore, please make a note that:
Our ceremony will be held indoors on Saturday, May 26th at 2pm. SWGSA is also proud to announce that everyone’s collective effort of pre-paying for graduation tickets, and the support of our School of Social Work, allowed us to book a large off-campus venue for the first time in our SJSU Social Work history! The location of our ceremony will be: San Jose’s McEnery Convention Center, Parkside Hall, just a few blocks away from SJSU.
The graduation ceremony is for the graduates (us!) and the undergraduates of the School of Social Work. So, although we have a bigger venue, collectively (the graduates and undergraduates) have already sold quite a few tickets. Space is limited. Therefore, we will be holding a ONE DAY follow-up ticket sale, selling tickets on a FIRST COME, FIRST SERVE basis, at the MANDATORY Bridging the Gap event, on Tuesday, JANUARY 23, 2007 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m, at the SJSU Student Union Ballroom. Look for the SWGSA reps when you sign-in for Bridging the Gap.
Lastly, I am proud to announce that Erika Martinez has been elected as the MSW student chair of the Graduation Committee. (Thank you Erika for all of your hard work already!) She will work in collaboration with her BASW student-leader counterparts to help plan and make important decisions about the ceremony, and to carry out vital details.
Everyone is invited to participate in the Graduation Committee. If you are interested, just attend this committee meeting which will be held on the first Monday of each month, at noon, in the social work office, beginning on February 5th.

Over 50 agencies from across the Bay Area are coming to meet with YOU!
This is the largest response to our Bridging the Gap event yet, and the agency representatives are very excited to see you! Thank you to the Bridging the Gap committee who helped put this event together for our social work students.
Just a friendly reminder and FAQs for Bridging the Gap. Please note that all BASW and MSW students are required to attend. This event has been scheduled on a day before the official start of classes for your convenience. For those in field, the School of Social Work has also approved your attendance as part of your internship hours, and we are cooperating with our supporting agencies to allow your participation. Q: Why should I come?
A:
This is the only career fair offered that is specifically targeted to social
work students on campus - both undergraduate and graduate social work students
will benefit from this event:
• Find internship
opportunities
• Learn about job opportunities
• Network with agencies and other social work
professionals
• Learn about social services
and programs in various counties/locations
Get started early!
It typically takes new graduates 3-6 months to land their first job. The
best way to find a job is through networking; only 10% of open positions are
actually posted online, or formally listed. This is your chance to meet
professionals in your field and develop your network.
Q: I already
have a job lined-up, why should I come?
A: Even if you already
have a job lined-up after graduation, you will still want to attend the fair to
increase your knowledge of other services and programs that are available for
your future clients. Success in the field comes from partnerships and the
ability to connect your clients with the best and most appropriate services
available. This fair will be your chance to network with other social work
professionals and learn about trends and issues in the
profession.
Q: I've never been to a job fair; how should I prepare
to best benefit from this event?
A: We have partnered with the
SJSU Career Center to provide advising and preparation tips through workshops

I hope you are all doing well. It is time to start planning for your first year field placement. Please plan to attend the Field Placement Planning Meeting for part-time (3-Year Program) students starting internship in Fall 2007 which will be held on Tuesday February 27, 2007 from 6-8 PM, location to be determined. Our goal is to assure that you are placed in an appropriate setting for your internship. At this meeting, you will meet with other students to further discuss and think about placement and you will have the opportunity to ask faculty and staff questions about the placement planning process.
Some of you have already contacted me indicating that you would like to petition for an exception to the "Use of Employment as a Field Placement Setting" School of Social Work Policy. For your convenience, I've attached a form with all the relevant information you need to complete your petition. Please note that the deadline has been moved up to Tuesday February 6, 2007. ScWk 285: Social Work and Social Problems This course examines the economic, political, social, and cultural factors operating at the local, national, and global levels that serve to generate and maintain challenges for disenfranchised, oppressed, and marginalized groups. It will provide a framework for critically analyzing and understanding the intercultural, intracultural, psychosocial, social, and political factors, and ethical considerations that serve to maintain and promote marginalization, and suggests transcultural social work methods of practice for appropriate service delivery with special population groups such as Latinos, Asians and Pacific Islanders, African American, and sexual minorities. The course will also highlight social services to immigrants and refugees, emphasizing cultural and cross cultural issues, immigration policies, and social work knowledge and practice. - Supervising visits between families and children placed outside the
home
- Providing child watch while parents attend support groups and
classes
- Mentoring a child by offering support, friendship, & being a

- Accompanying/Transporting children to family visits and

- Tutoring a child to overcome academic challenges

Happy Holidays Everyone!
I hope you are all recuperating from fall semester and enjoying your vacation! As you all know, Bridging The Gap, the annual career and internship fair, will be held on Tuesday, January 23rd from 10am to 2pm. The Bridging the Gap Committee has been hard at work getting agencies to participate and smoothing out all of the details.
They have been working hard at getting agencies from all over the Bay Area to attend to make the event worthwhile to all job and internship seekers (You!) regardless if you live in San Jose, Oakland, San Francisco, etc., etc.. As social workers, we all know that neither one person, nor no one committee can accommodate everyone (although we try!) and so we need your help. I have attached a flyer that you can download or email to your place of internship, an agency you would like to work/intern, or just any agencies that you think should be there. The Bridging the Gap Committee may have already invited them, so if you ask them it could be a great reminder, or if not, it may be a wonderful invitation!

Dear MSW Students,
Happy New Year! Hope you all have been able to enjoy the holidays and some rest.
Some have reported missing some information sent via email by the MSWMail listserv. Starting in 2007, notices sent by MSWMail will have a label identifying the year and number of the message, i.e., the "2007:1" in the subject line refers to the year 2007 and the first message sent that year. This is to help students track disseminated information and determine if they have missed any messages sent through the listserv. We are also investigating the creation of an electronic bulletin board so that students who miss messages or need to refer to previously sent information can view an archive.
Thanks for your support and patience regarding our attempts to use technology to improve aspects of our program. If you have comments or suggestions re the listserv, please feel free to share them with me (plee4@email.sjsu.edu), and I will pass them along.
