Field Practicum

Field practicums (internships) - the placement of students in agency settings are an integral component of the BASW curriculum. Field practicums engage the social work student in supervised social work practice and provide opportunities to apply classroom learning in the field. Through their field practicum, students refine their professional social work skills and integrate classroom course content with on-the-job experience in service provision, outreach, networking, and resource development.

Students in the program must complete two semesters of field practicum which demands a minimum commitment of 240 hours per semester (2 days/week) or a total of 480 hours of field internship in a program approved agency.

Students planning to enter field practicum should have their schedule and personal affairs arranged to enable them to devote 16 hours per week for field education in a program-approved agency. A valid California driver's license and use of a vehicle is strongly recommended.

Students who do not meet the minimum standard of performance may be required to complete more hours of field work to gain the minimum competencies necessary for social work practice. If a student receives NO CREDIT for either of the field practicum course, w/he will be disqualified from the major.
