Sociology Department Policies
Change of Major to Sociology
- The Sociology Department will accept change of majors for those continuing SJSU students with an All College GPA of 2.5 or above.
- If students do not have an All College GPA of 2.5 or above, they need to take Soci 1, Soci 80 and Soci 116. An average of 2.7 GPA in these three courses is the minimum standard to be considered for approval of the Change of Major request. These three courses can be taken no more than 2 attempts per course and must be completed within 24 SJSU attempted units (excluding W grades).
Probation
- The criteria for Probation in the Major are identical to those for SJSU Probation at the University level.
- For further assistance, please contact the department's major advisor.
Disqualification
- The criteria for Disqualification from the Major are identical to those for SJSU Disqualification at the university level.
- For further assistance, please contact the department's major advisor.
Reinstatement to the Sociology Major
- Following a first disqualification, Sociology majors may be reinstated only once to this major. After a second disqualification from Sociology, students will NOT be allowed a second reinstatement to this major (i.e., they will never be allowed to resume as Sociology majors at SJSU)
- The forms for reinstatement are available on the university's website at http://www.sjsu.edu/registrar/docs/Reinstatement_Petition.pdf.
