Back to School Safety Tips

As we begin a new academic year we would like to share with the campus community a few key safety tips.

General Safety Tips

  • Be aware of your surroundings at all times and the possibility of someone approaching you:

Driving a Car

  • Have your keys in your hand as you approach your car.

  • Keep your valuables out of sight, under the seat, or in the glove compartment or trunk.

  • Check the back seat and floor before entering your car.

In an Elevator

  • When riding an elevator, stand by the control board. If you feel in danger, press all the buttons and get off the elevator as soon as possible.

  • Check the inside of an elevator before entering. Wait for the next elevator if you are unsure of the people inside.

Self Defense

  • If someone tries to take your belongings, let them go, and call the police.

  • In considering your reactions to different situations, keep these three basic rules in mind:

    1. Trust your instincts.

    2. Don't be afraid to be impolite or make a scene; this is especially important if someone you know threatens or attacks you.

    3. Try to remain calm and use your imagination and good judgment; give yourself time to think.

Where You Live

  • Keep doors locked — even if you are going to be gone only a few minutes.
  • Notify the police and/or UHS staff (on-campus) of suspicious individuals who appear to be "hanging around."
  • Get to know your neighbors.

Drinking/Parties

Before the Party

  • Eat plenty of food.

  • Plan # of drinks you will have.

  • Assign designated driver or walker.

  • Know your TAXI Cab phone number (408) 777-7777.

During the Party

  • Keep track of how many drinks.

  • Keep track of your drink.

  • Avoid drinking games.

  • Pace & Space: 1 drink, 1 water, 1 hour.

  • Listen to friends: “You’ve had too much”.

After the Party

  • Watch out for your friends.

  • If friends show even one sign of alcohol poisoning, call 911, and get them the help they need.

  • Make sure you and your friends have a safe ride home.

  • Leave with the friends you came with.

  • Drink water.
