Requirements
- Attend an orientation
- GPA of 2.87 or better
- BA/BS Degree from an accredited university and program
- Pass CBEST
- Pass entrance interview

- Apply ONLINE to Graduate School for admission to SJSU through CSU
Mentor
- Download and complete the Department Application.
- Download three (3) forms of recommendation/reference
- Submit a resume.
- Submit a statement of purpose essay as to why you want to be a Special
Educator. This essay will be one of the tools used to determine admission.
Thoughtful consideration should be given to its content and development.
Download and complete a Self-assessment Dispositions
Evaluation form
- Submit passing CBEST scores (must have proof of passing scores prior
to admission).
- Submit CSET Scores for Subject Matter Competency. (Check with department
on appropriateness.)
- Download Pre-professional Experience Form.
- Download Technology Self-assessment Form.
- Submit a copy of your Emergency Permit or Certificate of Clearance
(Life Scan). This is our state permit to work with children.
- Submit a copy of your Regular Education Credential, only California
Multiple Subjects (Elementary) or Single Subject (Secondary) are acceptable
if applicable.
- Attend an orientation (Mandatory)
Qualifications to continue in the Program
- Meet subject matter competency. If you haven't you must satisfy this
requirement within one year from the date of your admission into the
program. Candidates interested in a credential in Early Childhood Special
Education need to meet with Dr. Peg Hughes to discuss your coursework
related to child development.
- If you are required to take courses in the Single Subject (Secondary)
area, you must download the Single Subject Focus information here before
the department will allow you to take those courses. Take this information
to the Secondary Education Department in SH 301 for planning verification
and approval.
If you are required to take EDEL 143A - Student Teaching in the Multiple
Subjects area, you must download the EDEL 143A agreement form here
before you can take that course. Take this form to the Elementary Education
Department in SH 305.
- Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better, AND receive grades of B or better
in all credential courses
- Follow prescribed sequences of courses and experiences
- Meet periodically with your assigned advisor (see
your letter of admission from the department) to discuss progress and
challenges or to seek suggestions
Qualifications to exit Program
- Completed program of studies and experiences with grades of B or
better.
- Passed exit practicum and interview.
- Passed portfolio project.
- Taken and passed RICA (if required)
Reminders: Student-teaching (exit practicum)
is done with students with disabilities. The disability of the students
must match the credential that you are working on. If you select the
student-teaching option, you must plan for one full semester to work
in a classroom under a Master Teacher k-6 (5 mornings and 2 afternoons);
7-12 (4 periods 5 days a week) for 15 weeks. |
