Thank you for your interest in the Department of Special Education! Programs currently being offered through our department are listed below:
Education Specialist Instruction Credential
Individuals interested in becoming Special Education teachers complete coursework and field experiences in one of the following areas:
- Mild to Moderate Disabilities
- Moderate to Severe Disabilities
- Early Childhood Special Education
Optional additions to Education Specialist Instruction Credential (other requirements apply):

- Intern Option - Candidates can choose to complete a credential program as an Intern, which allows them employment as a first year special education teacher while enrolled in courses.
- Concurrent Option - Designed to result in a Preliminary Multiple Subject or a Single Subject Credential AND an Education Specialist Instruction Preliminary Credential in Mild to Moderate Disabilities.
Masters in Education
MA degree with a concentration in Special Education.
*Reminder: To be a teacher in California's public schools, you must have a teaching credential, not a Master's Degree.

Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD)
Early Childhood Special Education (ECSE)
Autism Certificate
You can become the expert about Autism Spectrum Disorders in your school or workplace. The courses are online with some fieldwork requirements that involve observing classes for students that have Asperger's Syndrome, observing in an Occupational Therapy clinic, mentoring college students who have ASD, and/or talking about the strengths and challenges of children on the spectrum.
Undergraduates: Minor in Special Education
Current SJSU pursuing a Bachelor's degree may choose to minor in Special Education.
