Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Credential
Thank you for your inquiry about our program. First let me explain that
the credential requirements in California have changed. Previously, the
state required that anyone wishing a credential to teach any type of
special education classes must first obtain a general education credential
for elementary or secondary school. This requirement is being eliminated
and programs are changing to meet the new standards, under which candidates
can complete a special education training program at the graduate level
directly after the B.A. or B.S. degree in a subject matter major. At
San Jose State, we have implemented the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (D/HH)
credential program. Above is the course descriptions for our program.
Acceptance into the D/HH program requires an interview. For students
from out of state, acceptance can be conditional for the first semester
if an interview is not possible.
California requires all teacher credential candidates to have subject
matter competency. This requirement is met either by completion of an
approved undergraduate major or the passing of either the California
Subject Exam for Teachers (CSET) or a Professional Assessment for Beginning
Teachers (PRAXIS). Please refer to the Advisement Guide for approved
majors at San Jose State. A person with a general education teaching
credential from a state that has a reciprocal agreement with California
(and currently 31 states do) would be eligible to receive a preliminary
credential here.
This gives you the basic information you need. If you wish to apply,
you need to apply to both the Department of Special Education and to
the Graduate School. Let us know if you have any further questions.

As a result, graduates from SJSU are prepared with a wide repertoire
of skills and knowledge in communication, curriculum and a respect for
individual differences and choices. SJSU also offers a Deaf Education
minor for undergraduates with a strong focus on education deaf children
and development of ASL and/or SEE sign language skills. For students
entering into the graduate program, certain majors are approved at SJSU.
Students may begin some of this coursework at the undergraduate level
with a minor in Deaf Education. Go to Admission page for requirements
and procedures for admission. Go to the Forms page for Department Application
