MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
In order to be eligible for any of our programs in the Special Education Department, you must meet ALL of the following requirements.
- Bachelors Degree or equivalent on or before the beginning of the admission semester.
- Minimum of 3.0 GPA for MA program
- Minimum of 2.87 GPA for Education Specialist Credential Programs (Please keep in mind that those that are admitted into the program MUST maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in order to file a Education Specialist Instruction Credential)
- Certificate of Clearance
- CBEST and CSET (all parts) must be passed before admission semester.

ALL of the following must be completed by the Admission Deadline to be considered into a program of interest:
I. ADMISSION TO THE UNIVERSITY GRADUATE STUDIES
- Apply ONLINE at CSUMentor. There will be a $55 application fee.
- Submit one officially sealed trancript from each college where you studied. If you completed your undergraduate at San Jose State University, you do NOT need to submit your own SJSU transcript. Send or deliver transcript to:

II. ADMISSION TO THE DEPARTMENT OF SPECIAL EDUCATION
- Write a Statement of Purpose that includes: 1) Experiences and education which demonstrate your concern and capacity to work with people. 2) Your professional goals in pursuing the degree and/or credential. 3) Any additional information that is important to you.
- Submit a Current Resume
- Three (3) Letters of Recommendation AND the additional dispositions evaluations must be completed by each recommender.

III. ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS FOR YOUR SPECIALIZATION
Education Specialist Instruction Preliminary Credential Program
- Attend a General Orientation
- Complete the Preliminary Credential Program Application Packet
- Take and submit CBEST scores
Intern Option
- Attend an Intern Orientation
- Attend Intern Institute in the summer (Check website for dates)
- Submit proof of subject matter competency
- Intern Program Application
- Intern Agreement Form
- Consent Form
- Supervision Course Application
Concurrent Option
Submit a Concurrent Option Form
For Mild/Moderate Credential with Single Subject Credential:
- Attend a Concurrent Orientation
- Must also apply and be admitted by Secondary Education Department
- Please review their application requirements and turn in additional documents for their department
- Complete their Applicant Information Form
For Mild/Moderate Credential with Multiple Subject Credential:
- Attend a Concurrent Orientation
- Must also apply and be admitted by Elementary Education Department
- Please review their application requirements and turn in additional documents for their department
Masters Program with Concentration in Special Education
- Attend an MA Orientation
- Complete MA Application Packet
- Pass the MA Writing Assessment prior to admission

ADMISSIONS PROCEDURE
It is the responsibility of the applicant to make certain that all admission materials are received by the designated application deadline.
Your admission will be based on a holistic review of your application. These criteria, which carry no pre-assigned weights, include:
- Candidate's full record of achievement
- Candidate's statement of purpose
- Letters of recommendation that attest for candidate's qualifications
- Passing of required exams for program of interest
If selected, you will be invited for an interview with a graduate advisor who will determine your final eligibility into the program.

RECOMMENDATIONS:
Start the application process early! Send in your required documents as soon as possible to avoid an incomplete application file.
- Secure your letters of recommendation early. If your letters of recommendation are not received by the department, your file cannot be processed.
- Submit an official transcript to GAPE as soon as possible for graduate admissions to process.
Seek outside funding to help pay for graduate school. Regardless of what institution you are applying to, having your own funding can only work in your favor.
