Info for StudentsPerhaps the greatest strength of the Sport Psychology program at SJSU is its flexibility and interdisciplinary nature. Below is a sample of what a typical graduate student might take for coursework. Please scroll down further to view a few selected thesis and project topics that our students have investigated.Sample Masters Degree CourseworkProgram for M.A. in Kinesiology 3 units: KIN 251 Analysis of Research and Issues in Kinesiology (required course) 3 units: KIN 267 Advanced Sport Psychology 3 units: KIN 264 Sport Sociology 3 units: KIN 168 Psychology of Coaching 3 units: KIN 261 Historical Interpretations of Kinesiology OR 3 units: KIN 260 Philosophy of Human Performance 6 units: KIN 299 Thesis with emphasis in Sport Psychology * OR KIN 298 Masters Project (3 units) with emphasis in Sport Psychology AND one additional 3-unit elective. - Six additional units of elective coursework: upper division or graduate coursework in Human Performance or other departments related to individualized program. Selected Masters Theses/ProjectsTerri Schneider, an elite adventure racer and former world-class triathlete, completed her thesis entitled, "A qualitative examination of risk taking among elite adventure racers." She presented the results at the 2003 AAASP conference in Philiadelphia. Cori Houston recently defended her thesis on adolescent female soccer players' experiences of competitive stress. She will present her results at the 2005 AAASP conference in Vancouver. Tawni Yamauchi is currently collecting data on her thesis involving focus groups with college women who adhere or fail to adhere to regular exercise programs. Suzan Jensen, a triathlete who has also summited Mt. Kilamanjaro, is completing her thesis on the use of Eastern philosophy to enhance sport performance. Amy Chang, also a former Ironman triathlete, is currently completing her qualitative thesis on the use of the Resonance Model to aid exercise adherence in women. Cody Brailsford, an athletic training/sport psych grad student, completed a project on the coping strategies of Japanese-American athletes. Denee Signorelli Schakow, currently a physical education teacher, wrote, filmed, and edited a video on eating disorders that was directed towards junior high students. Lisa Lawrence, an Athletic Training grad student, completed her qualitative thesis on the relationship between long-term injury and body image among women college athletes. Scott Buss, a tennis coach, completed his thesis on "A comparison of the elements of stage fright to pre-performance anxiety in sport." Victor Santamaria, a former All-American distance runner at UCLA, wrote a thesis entitled "Effects of precise associative mental strategies on distance running performance." |
