| SJSU Home : SJSU Strategic Planning : Shared Values Forum |
December 2004 & February 2005, Loma Prieta Room
Two forums were co-sponsored by the Office of the President and the SJSU Academic Senate as part of our unfolding strategic planning efforts. One with faculty, staff, and administrators. The other with students. The task for each was to share values.
At the Faculty, Staff, Administrator forum two questions guided discussion:
The first question was answered by individuals while the second was the topic of small group discussion. For the first question individuals simply listed their 3 words on a sheet of paper which was collected at the end of the forum. For the 2nd question, groups first listed words/phrases in response to the second question, subsequently rated each item in the list, then finally described each value in a statement (more than a word or phrase) and provided examples of how the value might be demonstrated.
At the Student forum:
Students were asked to individually respond to the following question: What 3 core values are of greatest importance to you as a student at SJSU? Students were asked to first identify the value using a word or two (give it a title) and then in a sentence or two describe the value (provide it in a value statement). After the individual exercise, the students participated in a small group discussion to identify core values they wanted to see prevalent at the University.
SJSU engaged in a process to discover and articulate shared values that govern our everyday interactions as we work together to serve our mission. This discovery process involved several steps, including: reviewing existing policies (e.g., mission statement, campus climate policy, student rights and responsibilities policy, academic freedom and professional responsibility policy, etc.); and engaging in conversations with various constituencies. Forums were held (in December, 2004 with SJSU faculty, staff and administrators and in February, 2005 with students) to facilitate a conversation around strategic planning. A set of shared values emerged from these discussions.

Summary of Values From Students
| Value | Description | Example(s) | Suggested Changes/Comments |
| Excellence | "We believe in maintaining high standards of excellence in teaching, learning and customer service. We value education. Our environment supports ongoing improvement and innovation in building knowledge. | Pursue excellence. Not becoming a "degree mill". High standards in classroom. Consistent standards for RTP. Tenured full professors continuing to develop and contribute. Faculty are experts in their fields. Expert quality research. Alumni achievement. High intellectual standards for students, faculty and administrators. Professional development for faculty and staff. Knowledge-based competency. High standards for customer service. Assess our performance. External recognition and reputation for academic excellence. | Need more resources and better information on where to find them; Ease
of access - there is too much red tape and not enough people who are willing
to help; Staff should treat students like the paying customers they are. Need to get rid of teachers who aren't passionate about teaching. Validated as critical, but too general of a description. Need accountability for not maintaining high standards. Add to the description, "Our environment … building knowledge and delivering services to our students. We believe in being current in new developments in our respective fields." We need to raise the bar. Make courses more challenging. Quality education. SJSU degree respected in professions. Improving students' choices of classes. How faculty/staff/administration interact with students. Success being goal oriented. No regrets. Education may be separate from Excellence. Education is a privilege. Respect the classroom. Respect educational privilege. Quality of teaching increase with faculty empowerment. Empower faculty to facilitate their classroom environment. Admission standards should be higher. |
| Integrity | We believe integrity is vital to our success. We are held accountable for our actions and expect honesty, truthfulness, fairness and trust from each other. | Honesty in reporting travel expenses. Applying the same standards and policies to everyone. Avoiding appearance of favoritism. Following through on what you say. Demonstrating values by example/behavior. Not plagiarizing. Not cheating. Being ethical. Be willing to admit to a mistake and correct it. Being proud that students that graduate are competent/well-educated as we say that are. Taking pride in self and taking pride in SJSU. | This value is extremely important. Truthfulness, academic honesty. Integrity is ethical choice. Honesty is separate from ethical. Lead by example was underscored several times. We need to create an Honor Code that holds students and faculty accountable. Integrate into all University functions and activities. Academic integrity. Workshops/integrity workshops for students. Faculty discussion of what plagiarism is. Ethics - No cheating. No plagiarism. You should pass or fail on your own accord. Don't cheat. Don't give other students answers. Add honesty to title "Integrity & Honesty" Emphasize honesty. So many (students) cheat, not many punished. Employers say SJSU students do not dress appropriately, etc. The description of integrity should be better/expanded. |
| Respect & Caring | We believe in respect and caring for all people. Our diverse community helps us understand, value, respect and celebrate our differences. We show respect by learning from each other and treating others the way we would like to be treated. | Hiring faculty and staff to reflect the diversity of the student body. Seek opinions of others. Working together in teams and communicating well among each other. Multilingual signage and services. Funding for offerings that encourage diversity. Embrace diversity by being inclusive and outreach to others to engage in meaningful dialog and interactions. Agree to disagree respectfully. Being polite. Encourage interaction among ethnic groups. Demonstrating a global consciousness. Give support and encouragement to others. | Important that caring was listed. Faculty who care make a difference in
a student's life. Be genuine. Student is the business of the university. Have respect for everybody. Need to pull out diversity as a separate value. Global consciousness. Respect the property. Privacy - add a special section for this. Embrace it, teach each other. More you experience, more it will help you in the future. Don't do enough about diversity. Interaction among ethnic groups is missing; we are self segregating and need a vehicle to interact more among groups. |
| Collaboration | We believe that to do our best work, we must build strong collaborative relationships on and off campus. Our environment promotes collegiality, which includes trust, respect, multicultural understanding, compassion and humanity. Our commitment to community helps us understand that we are working for the best interest of all of us. | Service to the community through students, research and outreach. Invite community input in planning. Model democratic living through shared governance. Forums at the university to inform of critical issues. Acknowledge there are different communities of intellectual discourse or discovery. Working efficiently as a team. Planning with broad representation of constituencies. Provide learning opportunities outside the classroom. Lots of opportunities to get involved in a variety of activities. Support student organizations. | Compassion and humanity should be moved to caring and respect value. Include something about learning opportunities outside the classroom (housing, student activities, etc.) Change title from Collaboration to Community. Re title to "Citizenship" Add to example "Incorporate service learning into every major." Contribute to the people who live close to SJSU. We are apart of the area. We need to make this a continuous commitment. Community/business/university collaboration. This has nothing about working together. Who is this referring to? Add to the definition "Faculty and staff should engage with students in and out of the classroom. Students affect and are affected by the environment in which they learn." Emphasize collaboration of working with community. Students need to engage, otherwise too isolated. Add more camaraderie to the examples. Forums (like this one) are a good example of collaboration. |
Additional Values
| Value | Definition/Description |
| Education | Education is a value because it gives students the opportunity to progress
to a better position in society. A quality experience is a key to the growth
of a student. Capable/competent professionals. Teachers need to be able to teach and apply the material, so that students can apply material. Teachers need to be creative, interesting. Need to bring practical out-of-classroom experience. Improving faculty to student ratio. |
| Professionalism | Adhere to high standards as a professional. Demonstrate excellent role model behavior. |
| Professional classroom. Remember that we're here for education and become professionals. | |
| Students involved and aware | Students have a responsibility to be informed. Faculty and staff also
need to become involved on campus. Involvement needs to happen on all levels. Student organizations. Leave university better than you found it. Student participation in out-of-classroom activities and not just athletic and sporting events. Need for faculty to be involved outside the classroom, and if not, be willing to share important out-of-classroom events. Accommodate all students, not just pushing campus housing and sporting events. All types of students, commuter, non-commuter, club/organizations, the student who just wants an education. |
| Affordability | Help students decrease work hours by giving more scholarships and higher paying student jobs. |
| Excellence & student-centered | Transfer students are ignored. Didn't feel welcomed. Make transfers be required to go to orientations. Takes too long to get paperwork from admissions/registrars. Do not return phone calls in a timely manner. It takes too long to input data for students to access in my SJSU. |
| Chose SJSU because I had heard good things. Don't experience the campus as a commuter school. Continue to make campus life bigger and bigger. Students would like to see more happen on Fridays and Saturdays. Out of class experiences should be supported more. | |
| Knowledge | Maintain high standard to the degree. The school continues to have a strong reputation. Academic integrity important. Think little things add up to making this place better. |
| Self improvement health | Improve bodies, minds, social life. |
| Social | Ballroom dance club meets Friday nights. Support student organizations more. |
| Commitment | Consistent with actions. |
| Perseverance | Important - life will always throw stuff at you. Keep going for what you believe in. |
| Growth | Everything should grow into something more than what you were before. |
| Excitement | Develop a culture of overall excitement. I will take the initiative to get involved because I'm that way, but a lot of people have to be absorbed by the culture. If the culture isn't exciting, then students won't be. |
| Diversity | Diversity is the heart of SJSU. Students learn from friends of different backgrounds. Diversity should be better reflected in faculty demographics. Grades and internship opportunities should be awarded on merit. Diversity in course offerings. People learn skills of how to work within diverse staff teams. Embedding in other values doesn't give enough meaning. Diversity is so important at SJSU. Needs to be explicitly stated, it's more implicit now. Need to see it, hear it, touch it. Some people won't get it unless it is articulated. |
| Creativity | Let the University be a "birthplace of ideas". Encourage students to think outside the box. |
| Pride | Proud of the opportunity to be a student at SJSU. We're just as good as any other school. |
| Take pride in campus. Integrate self into school. Make your degree and experience meaningful. Take pride in being educated - learning for sake of learning. | |
| Know why you choose SJSU. Realize opportunities in Silicon Valley, and
its so diverse. Pride in yourself, in each other, in SJSU. All tied to a quality education. If you feel it is quality, then you will have more pride. When you are unable to get classes then students are cheated. Don't do something that you are not proud of. |
|
| Academic Achievement | Known for research in all colleges. |
| Leadership development | Learning outside of class. Goal is to be a leader in the organization. |
| Respect for individuality | Respect for individuality in religious beliefs, sexuality. Intolerance isn't appreciated. |
| Equality | No one should be treated differently. No unfair treatment based on race. |
| Help one another | Help new students, be helpful to one another. Give support and encouragement. Be kind Don't redirect to other departments. Find answers for students. |
| Learning | Learn in and out of class. Being taught in class and apply to real world. Recognize learning in and out of classroom. Learn for individual growth - not just meeting criteria. Not just about getting a job. Need professors to articulate value of learning for learning. |
| Community | Too much of commuter campus. Need to develop a stronger sense of community and belonging. Students need to see themselves as part of a larger whole. |
| Have fun | Choose to be here - if not happy, don't come. Experience better if people want to be here. Enjoy the learning process. Better balance with work and play. |
| Proactive | Get involved with the community. |
| Honesty | Should be a separate value, not just a theme in each one. |
| Service learning | Opportunity to take what you learn in classroom and take it to the community. |
| Social interaction, participation | College is avenue for social growth. Get involved in things. |

Individual Exercise - Students
| Value | Times mentioned | Description |
| Education Knowledge Academic Learning Quality Education Good Professors Quality Faculty Academics Academic Achievement Learning |
22 | Education should be valued while attending SJSU. Education I feel it is of value because it enables us to progress to a better position in society. A quality education is important to me and I expect to receive one at this University. A good education will catapult me to a better and healthier position in life. Serious study and learning should be encouraged. Entrepreneurial society is a good example of a great student club. Gaining knowledge from top notch professors so SJSU has a very high reputation - making my degree more desirable. The quality of instructors on campus. I have a thirst for knowledge and the professors here are the best. All students deserve an opportunity to earn a degree in higher education that means something. Qualified teachers that are excited to teach the courses. Be able to get a good job after college. An education is a stepping stone for one to advance financially and mentally. I believe everyone should be granted access to an education that includes quality teachers, sufficient classes and resources. Being able to learn a variety of things at school. As an engineering major I'm not allowed to take piano class. The business of the University is to provide an education to its students and for the students to take advantage of that opportunity. To provide quality education, high standards regarding hiring, retention, promotion and tenure must be obtained. Respect the fact that education is a privilege and that I owe it to myself and the university and taxpayers to make the most of my opportunities. To respect the classroom and the educational setting. Our whole purpose in attending SJSU is to further our years of academics and to broaden our education and knowledge. Without academics, I wouldn't be here. We need to raise the bar and not dumb down the standards of this university. I believe that academics is very important to students at SJSU to become successful. A degree from SJSU should be something to be respected in the professional world. Students should not wonder if they will get a job after graduation, but should have to choose among many offers. Education is a priority, therefore the needs of the students should be assessed. Scholarly research that is dependable and reliable in all fields of study. Proper preparation for real world. Knowledge to succeed in life. Having the ability to apply learned material from academia into real world. Learning is not just understanding concepts, grades or degrees but fully participating "humanitarianism". |
| Integrity Honesty Academic Integrity Academic Honesty Ethical Integrity/Pride |
21 | Students should be treated with integrity and display integrity with each
other. Honesty is a key to building trust in relationships. Sincere to fellow students and friends. Integrity in academic work. A student should always maintain integrity and stick to core values since going to college can challenge what you believe in academically, socially and personally. No cheating on any exam. Honesty Academic Honesty Students should not cheat. Being honest with the people you know; being honest with yourself about your abilities Being honest is the best way to be with anyone. Integrity is an ethical choice to be the best morally that you can be. Integrity is the work I do on my own. That I respect the professors and the classroom setting. I hold myself out as who I am without compromising my personal beliefs. Students should not be cheating. They don't understand that they are doing more harm to themselves than good. Have enough self respect not to cheat. I feel that this campus needs to emphasize the importance of integrity in the classroom amongst peers, staff and faculty and on into the workplace. This goes along with academics in a way because to become successful, honesty (not cheating on your grade) is very important. I believe that students should pass or fail on their own and not use other people's work. Honesty, no plagiarism, no cheating. We need to be honest about our homework. We need to be honest at our closed book exams. It is in order to insure that what we create is to the best of our ability. Also in a sense to ourselves and our professors. Taking pride in what we do as students, human beings & as a university. Bringing integrity to self and school by best practices. Telling the truth. Honesty is the best policy. |
| Social Activity Memorable Experience Involvement Participation Pride & Spirit Academics & Social Community Social Interaction |
18 | A first-time college experience is something that only happens once. Students
should be put in an environment that facilitates participation in clubs
and activities. Leading a passive lifestyle whether as a student or in general, wastes all the opportunities available. As students at SJSU, we should make use of the resources available. Wholesome social and recreational activities should be encouraged. SJSU Ballroom Dance Club is a great example of a great student club. More active after hour facilities open to students. The college experience. Having certain opportunities that makes college memorable. Stands out not as a commuter school, SJSU is #1. A lot of us seem so busy and unapproachable. It's hard to make friends here. Student involvement is very critical to complete a college education. Student involvement informs the student and helps the student change things for their own desires. Encourage and allow student participation on every level - academically, socially, etc. Being proud to be a part of SJSU and always having that pride in everything we do - academics, athletics, getting involved, etc. to fully enhance our college experience. There is a strong need to have a sense of belonging, to be a part of the university. It is important for an SJSU student like myself to feel connected with the university on the academics as well as social side. A one-ness between students and staff, a family feeling. Students spending time on campus. College provides an avenue for social growth and interaction. To expose individual to new ideas, beliefs and lifestyles. To foster an environment for events that facilitate school pride, individual interaction and growth. The university should promote and support groups that facilitate this. Sports, fraternities, social, cultural and community organizations. Feeling that we are all part of SJSU and have common goals. The student not always learns best in the classroom, but through social interaction as well. Being a commuter school there is a lack of a community. There needs to be more of a sense that we belong and having pride that we attend here. Camaraderie among students and between staff, and faculty. Feeling a belonging makes the experience that much more enriching. |
| Respect Responsibility to Others Responsibility Caring about Students Caring |
16 | Everyone on the SJSU campus should be treated with respect. We as a community need to respect one another's opinions. Treat others as you would like to be treated. If you are nice to others, they'll be nice back. If someone is mean to you, turn the other cheek. As human beings and residents on this planet, we have a responsibility to take care of each other and the planet we live on. Respect for everyone on campus - students, professors, staff, etc. Every student should respect one another. We are all here for the same reason, we should help each other achieve our goals. As students we should be responsible in what we do. We have a responsibility to be involved as well as respectful to our fellow peers. We should be responsible for the changes we want to see. Administrators caring about students and understanding needs of students and supporting them accordingly. SJSU is such a diverse school, everyone should have respect for each other. Respect towards self and others, the university, staff and faculty, facilities on campus. Respect for people's backgrounds, cultures, races, etc. Students and faculty should refrain from being negative toward one another. Respect for others as well as yourself. We here treat each other with respect. If we respect other students and professors, they will treat us respectfully back. Having respect for everyone no matter how different they are. I want to be treated just like the way I treat others. People shouldn't be making mean comments about others. |
| Diversity | 11 | Developing friends from different nationalities. I have never had so many friends from different areas of the world. In college, students should be exposed to different cultures, beliefs and ideas that they otherwise may not be exposed to. With a campus like SJSU, where various cultures, beliefs, sexual orientations, etc. are converged, it is important to recognize, accept and appreciate all these differences. Embracing our different cultures, personalities, backgrounds, identities, beliefs, etc. to appreciate each other and to learn from one another. Embracing the different cultures, personalities, backgrounds, ideas, values, ethnicity of everyone on our campus community and learning from each other while implementing individuality as well as commonality Being involved in many things and experiences - all things, good and bad. SJSU's campus has an abundance of cultures. Unfortunately we stick very close to our own. SJSU could do something to bring them together to assimilate. I think that SJSU should maintain a diversity value because through this value we can encourage the interaction of various cultures. Ethnic awareness is important to SJSU because it allows students to come together and embrace one another. Diversity gives students the ability to view population expanding from many cultures as it relates to percentage of student body. |
| Support Helping Others Camaraderie |
7 | Most students are from different backgrounds and often need the support
of others to feel comfortable expressing issues affecting them without fear
or feeling intimidated. We should all support each other in our studies and goals to graduate. We should help others to achieve their goals (e.g., tutoring) There are so many self-centered people in the world. We, SJSU students, want to help each other in learning. We should also help new SJSU students to know the school better. Helping people who are in need. People working together to support each other through this process. Teachers and students form a supportive environment where questions are encouraged (right or wrong) |
| (School) Pride/Honor Honor & Pride |
5 | Having people appreciate the school/campus/administration to where they
are happy to go to school at SJSU. Having pride in everything that we do from academics to our mascot to athletics to the programs and services we have. Just being proud of who we are and the things that make our college community so dear and valuable to our quality education. Having self pride, pride in myself and what I do and who/what I represent. Don't get involved or do something that I don't believe it. All too often people grunt "I go to SJSU". It shouldn't be something to be ashamed of, but for many it is. Proud that we have opportunity to go to SJSU. |
| Communication | 4 | I feel we need to have good communication with one another to better understand
each other. Communication between staff and students and between departments. A faster communication. Starting off on the right foot means having the ability to communicate and work together as a team. |
| Ease of Access Customer Service Resource Availability |
3 | Access to information about education, SJSU as an institution and ability
to cut through red tape is important. Be treated like a customer in a retail
store. Students should have access to campus resources that they are entitled to (computers, parking, tutoring, etc.) It is important to be aware of services, programs and resources. It would be beneficial for students to know where to go, who to go to and how to do things on campus. |
| Change Agent Make Things Better |
3 | As time changes so should an individual or institution to the changing
times and society. A person with a college degree, I believe has the tools and skills to be a great contributor to society that will be a responsible change agent for the betterment of our society. I believe in making everything better in the future; making things better than when I started; and just making this a friendly place |
| Excellent Teaching |
2 | Diversified teaching methods combined with knowledgeable teachers in their fields will lead us on the right track in studying what will be really important. Skills, knowledge and teachers' experience and internship experience provided to students will be very important. |
| Health | 2 | I value my health and would like to see more solid health programs on
campus. Healthful living should be encouraged. |
| Not Student Favoritism Equality |
2 | In a class involving presentations (e.g., graduate level courses) it is
disappointing to find out that your work was better than someone else, yet
in the final grades don't get a good grade as someone who did worse with
those presentations. No unfair treatment. |
| Advocacy/Shared Governance | 2 | Fighting for what is right at all levels - campus, CSU wide, state-wide,
nationwide and worldwide. Understanding value of shared governance and the
responsibility that goes with it. Relationships with faculty and staff are
important yet it should be student-centered. Representing our views and fighting for what is right on our campus. Advocacy and participation in the college experience as part of shared governance. |
| Success | 2 | Getting a job, making money and having your dreams come true. Everyone is here to succeed and graduate. |
| Environment | 1 | As a young environmentalist who studies the environment, I value my environment and the environment of mankind. I think the University system should value the environment of the campus and the global community by designing an environmental friendly campus. |
| Commitment | 1 | The university or student shows commitment to not only integrity and success but to growth as a whole and to your/our main goal and priority. |
| Perseverance | 1 | To endure failure and success and keep trying through hardships. |
| Personal Growth | 1 | Students come to college to meet a goal, follow a career path and to prepare themselves for life's challenges. The desire for personal growth and development can affect the experience a student will have during his/her college career |
| Relationships | 1 | Making life long friends with other students and/or professors. Moving beyond the classroom with relationships |
| Love | 1 | Everyone deserves to be loved. |
| Time with professors | 1 | More office hours, longer office hours with a professor instead of email. Sometimes a one-on-one with your professor is a lot more meaningful and rewarding for a student. |
| Academic counselor | 1 | Having one counselor throughout your college stay is also meaningful. Not knowing who to go to with academic question is difficult to deal with. |
| Career placement | 1 | The school's ability to network with outside world will provide us what courses we need to learn to prepare for our future career. |
| Network & cooperation | 1 | School can promote network society with different discipline. This will let us get to know others and make friends and use each other's resources. |
| Professor encouragement | 1 | Professors do play a role in motivating students. If you are a great student, yet notice that a professor offers information regarding research programs etc. to others, one does feel left out, aka student favoritism. |
| Respectability | 1 | Establishment of realistic and aggressive goals; ascertaining information about achieving those goals which are most important to student; following through on commitments. |
| Reputation | 1 | The name attached to my degree. The importance of it. The name recognition as a good school. |
| Openness to new ideas | 1 | Our campus needs to make some changes to be a premiere school. Staff members must be open minded to make our school well-known. |
| A good gym | 1 | The current sport center is too small to fit that many students at night. |
| Money, affordability | 1 | Being able to afford what is needed to be comfortable and be able to study. |
| Flexibility | 1 | Students should not have to worry about classes being full. |
| Freedom of expression | 1 | Students should be able to share ideas freely and express themselves without fear of being harassed, put down, etc. |
| Service learning | 1 | Having the opportunity to put what you learn in the classroom to help others through community service. |
| Discipline | 1 | Dedication and focus applied to achievement of tasks. Should/must originate in desire, not in commands. |
| Application of ability | 1 | Capacity to make use of knowledge/tools gained at SJSU. |
| Leadership development | 1 | I would like to leave SJSU with confidence that I have the skills to lead any organization to success, on any of it's worthy undertakings |
| Global consciousness | 1 | It is important that students of SJSU are conscious of the people and cultures that surround them in order to create a better world. |
| Student contribution | 1 | The contribution given by all students is important to the development of a growing community and environment. |
| Respect of individuality | 1 | Everyone has the right to express their individuality sexual orientation, culture, religion, spirituality) through their opinions, actions, appearance, etc., so long as they do not infringe on the values of others or are not imposed on the values of others. |
| Teamwork/support | 1 | United we stand, divided we fall. I believe overall that we as students, as human beings survive by supporting one another. Not necessarily always agreeing, but respecting, seeking understanding as opposed to bickering. |
| Professionalism | 1 | With our work and in class, all interaction must be done in a professional matter. Classes would be helpful to maintain professional environment. |
| Privacy | 1 | People's privacy needs to be respected. |

When you respect those around you, they respect you. Respect promotes honoring
diversity/. Respect means putting our students first, being respectful of their needs. Respect for innovation, trying something new, respect for new ideas. |
People feel respected when their opinions are sought. Give
students the ability to give their opinions and see their efforts heard
and integrated into action. Respects when students are doing something, if not explain why you cannot do what they request. Modeling the behavior of respect by attentiveness, eye contact. Use examples of what you have learned from students in your classes. |

It is difficult to be respectful if you don't have integrity
when you do it. Responsibility takes in accountability and assessment. |
We see many examples of students and others not taking
responsibility for actions. We are all responsible for contributing to the end result. Every student who applies to SJSU should get a response in a timely fashion. We have breakdowns in customer service in admissions. SJSU needs to be responsible in providing responses so that students get the classes and information they need to graduate. Faculty have responsibility for setting and maintain standards in the classroom. |

the est thing we can do is point somewhere they can get the service. Know our limitations. Figure out what we are going to do well and pursue excellence in that. |
If students ask a question and we don't know the answer,
give them directions on where to find the answer. Get the students what
they need one way or another. To reach excellence we need to tell and educate them on how to do it including professional development for faculty and staff. Program assessment could be linked to faculty. Have and communicate high expectations. Assess what we do so we are certain that we are excellent. In hours in should expect that students will have a GPA higher the 2.5 to be a Graduate Assistant. Have high Standards in classroom and our of classroom experience. |

| Integrity/Commitment/Competent Organization | 3 |
This value moves back and forth between the personal and the organizational, but we mean it here primarily as organizational integrity. It means how the university handles issues, the alignment of values and resources and procedures. It means providing good programs and delivering them well. | Not promising students something that the university can't deliver. Setting goals but not moving forward on them without resources. Conveying values to students by example of faculty and staff behavior and expectations. |
| Respect for Individuals |
2 |
Respect is appreciating each community member not for rank
or wealth, but for the diverse richness of each personality. People show
respect by adopting a willing attitude to learn from each other, to hear
each other's point of view, to put themselves in others' shoes and imagine
what it is to experience what the other is experiencing, and to help each
other accomplish the jobs that need to be done. Respect is shown in people
working together in teams and in communicating well among themselves and
with others. |
Does all-electronic communication lead to respect? |
| Partnering/collegiality |
1 |
This is collaboration, the synergy of multiple minds and finances. First, it means working efficiently as a team internally toward common goals of the organization and showing consistency in intention and delivery to those who view us from the outside. It involves planning by end users and a broad representation of internal constituencies. It requires competent people who know their jobs and a structure that supports them. Second, partnering means working with communities external to the university, taking advantage of being an urban campus and firmly establishing our niche as a unique campus. |

| Creating and Maintaining and Inclusive environment |
30 |
Creating a safe place to exchange ideas, promote diversity, and uphold an attitude of collegiality. Respect differences of opinions and role-model this to students. Value around growth and a "creative future," including being open to new ideas, things, and change. | Academic freedom and not rigidity of thought, being open to both conservative ideals and liberal ones equally, breaking down boundaries, convergence. | Fiscal/ Budgetary Responsibility |
25 |
Value of not being territorial about money in order to
utilize the funds to the best capacity, and maximize the production of SJSU
overall. |
Move away from the idea of the administrative versus academic components of the University. More convergence, collaboration, promote community, create incentives to work together on programs. Maximize budget by interconnecting goals, positions, internships, etc. Think of university as "puzzle" that fits together, and resource allocation accordingly. Counteract the challenge of limited resources, while maintaining an intellectually challenging and rigorous academic environment. |

value |

Description |
Example |
| Academic Excellence |
30 |
All the components of the education must be excellent;
content of the courses, the method of teaching, research-based, professionalism
exhibited by the students, and relevance to current societal tools and culture. |
The academic mission is the reason that SJSU exists. It means that students must "get pass the idea that "C's means degrees." What we teach must be grounded in research. Students must also have a role; attend class, be responsible, accountable, and respectful. Students must understand that education is not a right, but a privilege. Students who respect faculty will turn off cell phones and interact respectfully. |
| Diversity |
30 |
Diversity refers to the many ways that people are different; disabilities, ethnicity, sexual orientation, disciplines, age, etc. We would like SJSU to demonstrate understanding, value, and respect for the differences. The student body, staff and faculty should reflect the diversity of the community. | Community and classrooms are diverse. Students accept diversity as an expectation. The College of Social Work has diversity written into its mission statement. There is a need to help students understand the diversity of the community and to learn how to work within that environment. Some suggestions are to create opportunities for interaction and hold diversity workshops. |
| Professionalism | 30 |
Professionalism means being responsible, dependable, accountable,
competent, respectful, collaborative and being a continual learner. |
A professional attends sessions at the Center for Faculty Development. The Academic Integrity policy is an example of a document created to protect professionalism. There is a need for students, staff and faculty to demonstrate the qualities of being a professional as defined. An example of someone who exhibits professionalism is one who learns to collaborate and work with other departments within the university. |
| Employee Morale |
30 |
Good employee morale is reflected by a motivated employee
who works productively in a stimulating environment. |
Employee morale is related to appreciation and compensation. The employer acknowledges both publicly and privately appreciation for the work that was done. Give credit where credit is due. Employees who take care of each other create good morale. Wellness is important. The work place should provide resources for relaxation and fitness. Workload issues are key. The workload grows and grows. If something is added to workload, something must be taken away. Employers who consider the work load and prioritize on-going assignments create good morale. |

A question was raised that asked is there a measurement in place that can assess our integrity, our accountability, and, our service or, are we just accountable by title? If not, then complacency has the tendency to creep in. | helping a student that has been bounced around that should have been handled before he or came to our attention. |
| Integrity/Accountability | 33 |
Demonstrating honesty and trust, do what you say you will
do, be trustworthy, truthful, follow rules, hold ourselves and one another
accountable. |
If you know someone falsified a timecard, hold the individual accountable. Be willing to admit to a mistake if one was made and then correct the situation. |
| Respect | 33 |
1. treating others the way that we would like to be treated – following the “golden rule”. We will take the time to recognize and address the issue rather than having a preconceived notion or “quick-fix-get-out-of-here” answer. It is not about ME, but about being part of a much larger Team. | Taking the time and displaying the PATIENCE to answer questions or concerns – being mindful that we should display the attitude of provide the best “Customer Service” possible. |
| Community | 33 |
encompasses all values – we are all on the same page – we are in this together. We are all part of a grand scheme and dichotomy. Are individual actions have the ability to impact others – we are not islands unto ourselves. A sense of obligation should be our thought process – it is a two way street – how we engage with each other, our colleagues and especially the students! It takes a village to raise a child. | This community forum is an excellent example except it did not include students. |
| Student Centered |
33 |
We are here to educate and graduate every student that
has a desire to learn and grow. This could be called our “Magnum Opus”.
There is a campus-wide camaraderie within us that does not fail to take
note of the student “decision making process.” |
Mosaic, Muse, e.g., show that we are involved in ensuring our student that their time here will be a rewarding, enriching process. Include students on committees, task forces, etc. |
| Communication | 33 |
success in attracting students, faculty, staff is the result of effective and honest communication. We need to establish what is critical to the success and the quality of the project or stratagem that we are involved in – keeping focused with clear expectations. We can and should allow the customer (namely students) to tell us what is important. Sometimes we get too much or too little information is the complaint. We must always ask ourselves, are we engaged by “active listening” or nodding our heads while our minds are somewhere else. | Example of poor communication is when the English lab was dissolved but was not communicated to LARC so the number of students seeking assistance through LARC increased without the unit being prepared for the increase. |
| Multiple Perspectives |
33 |
they are all around us, race, nationality, gender, class,
educational levels, and the list goes on. It is imperative that we understand
that “communities” within and without this campus are alive
inside the total organism (the campus) actively and constantly seeking out
these groups in an effort to refine and update itself. We must use any means
necessary to maintain better and more informed data. |
This campus forum is an excellent example except it did not include students. |
