Associate Vice President for Student Affairs

Art King is Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at San José State University. Prior to his appointment in 2011, he served for six years as Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs for Diversity and adjunct faculty member in the College of Education at Towson University (TU). Before he worked at TU, Art spent five years as Director of Diversity Programs & Services at George Mason University (GMU). He also taught in the Freshmen Center. Previously, Art was Director of the Multicultural & International Student Center and adjunct instructor at Georgia Southern University (GSU). During his eight-year tenure at GSU, he developed co-curricular initiatives to benefit both domestic and international students. Earlier, Art was coordinator of Multicultural Programs at GSU and prior to that he was marketing representative at Regional Business Systems in Barbados, his native country.

In his current role, Art has administrative oversight for six functional areas within the Division of Student Affairs:  Career Center, Counseling Services, Disability Resource Center, Military & Veteran Student Services, Office of the University Ombudsman, and Student Health Center (including Wellness & Health Promotion and other drug prevention education). These departments comprise 120+ employees and 78+ student assistants, graduate assistants, peer health educators, and interns. Additionally, Art serves on the Academic Advising Council; Graduation Rate Enhancement & Achievement Team (GREATeam); Chair, Outstanding Graduating Senior Awards Committee; Crisis Assessment and Intervention Team (CAIT); Instruction & Student Affairs Policy Committee of the Academic Senate; Accommodations Review Board; Veterans Advisory Committee; Student Fairness Committee of the Academic Senate; Joint Enrollment Planning Committee; and Chair, Student Affairs Staff Development Committee. He is also a University Skelly-Coleman Review/Hearing Officer and the on-campus coordinator of the Cal State Super Sunday initiative that connects with and informs African American students and their families about what it takes to get into college

Art received honors and recognition for his dedication and commitment to student development, academic excellence, community service, and social justice. In 2010, he was presented with the Outstanding Service Award from the Regional HBCU Summit on Retention. In 2005, the Granville Academy of Northern Virginia presented him with its Community Service Award, while in 2002 the Southern Association for College Student Affairs (SACSA) honored him with the Bobby E. LeachAward for his significant contribution to the development of multicultural relations on campus. In 1996 and again in 2000, he received the NAACP/BSA Distinguished Faculty/Staff Award, and in 1997 he was presented with the Georgia College Personnel Association’s Best Student Learning Program Award.  Again in 1997, GSU recognized him with the Outstanding Staff Development Chairperson Award.

Art earned an AA in Mass Communication from the Barbados Community College and a BS in Communication Arts and MEd in Higher Education Student Development both from GSU. He completed PhD coursework in Conflict Analysis & Resolution at GMU. In 2006, he participated in the TU's Leadership Institute.

His professional affiliations and interests include memberships in the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators (NASPA), Pi Lambda Theta International Honor & Professional Association, the National Conference on Race & Ethnicity in American Higher Education (NCORE), and the American College Personnel Association (ACPA). In 2006 and 2011, he was a LeaderShape facilitator.
