William D. Nance, Ph.D.

WILLIAM D. NANCE, PH.D.

Dr. Nance has over 30 years of experience in business and academia, including financial management, commercial banking, and teaching, research, and consulting in IT management, business strategy, and organizational change. He has been at San José State University for 20 years. As a member of the faculty, Dr. Nance is a Professor in the Management Information Systems Department in the College of Business. As an administrator, he has served as the university's CIO, Associate Vice President for Academic Technology, Vice Provost for Academic Planning and Budgets, and Chief of Staff for three university presidents. In his current role as Vice President for Student Affairs, Dr. Nance oversees the university's broad range of student support services, including Admissions and other enrollment management activities, student service operations such as the Career Center and Health Center, and student activity units such as Housing, Student Involvement, and student government. He holds a Bachelor's degree in Finance from Western Michigan University, an MBA from the University of North Carolina's Keenan-Flagler School of Business, and a Ph.D. in MIS from the University of Minnesota's Carlson School of Management.

Cathie Busalacchi

CATHY BUSALACCHI

Cathy Busalacchi joined the campus in 1989 as the Sport Club Manager for the Student Union, Inc. Since then, she has held several positions within the Student Union and on the campus. In 1992 Cathy was promoted to the Associate Director for the Event Center, and in 1994 was appointed to be the Executive Director for the Student Union, Inc. (Student Union building, Sport Club, Aquatic Center, The Event Center Arena), a position she currently holds. In October of 2006, Cathy became the Associate Vice President for Campus Life overseeing Student Involvement, Housing, MOSAIC Cross Cultural Center, and the Student Union, Inc. Today, Cathy's portfolio includes the LGBT Center, Women's Resource Center, Student Conduct and Ethical Development, Associated Students, Student Union, Housing, MOSAIC Cross Cultural Center, and Student Involvement. Cathy serves on several committees across campus, and was instrumental in making the Student Union Expansion Project a reality, Day of Service a tradition, influential in the development and opening of the LGBT Center, as well as being the Chair for the Crisis Assessment Intervention Team (CAIT) for the University. Prior to joining San Jose State University, Cathy managed the Almaden Valley Athletic Club and the Oakridge Athlete Club in San Jose, and in 1984 she began a health/wellness business, consulting with large corporations and universities. She earned a Master of Arts degree in Organizational Management from the University of Phoenix, and her undergraduate degree in Recreation from San Jose State University.

Art King

ART KING

Art King is Associate Vice President for Student Affairs at San José State University. Prior to his appointment in 2011, he served for 6 years as Assistant Vice President of Student Affairs for Diversity and adjunct faculty member in the College of Education at Towson University (TU). Before he worked at TU, Art spent 5 years as Director of Diversity Programs & Services at George Mason University (GMU). He also taught in the Freshmen Center. Previously, Art was Director of the Multicultural & International Student Center and adjunct instructor at Georgia Southern University (GSU). During his 8-year tenure at GSU, he developed co-curricular initiatives to benefit both domestic and international students. Earlier, Art was coordinator of Multicultural Programs at GSU and prior to that he was marketing representative at Regional Business Systems in Barbados, his native country.

In his current role, Art has administrative oversight for 5 departments within the Division of Student Affairs: Counseling Services, Career Center, Student Health Center (including Wellness & Health Promotion and other drug prevention education), Disability Resource Center, and Office of the University Ombudsman.  Read more about Art King.

Sharon Willey, Ed.D

SHARON WILLEY, ED.D.

Sharon Willey serves as the Associate Vice President for Administrative & Enrollment Services. She leads five departments including Admissions & Outreach; Enrollment Operations & Communications; Financial Aid & Scholarships Office; Office of the Registrar; and Testing. These departments share the common goal of providing quality service and support to our students from the time of recruitment and application to graduation. Sharon also oversees division-wide fiscal and personnel administration. Sharon previously served as the Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs, where she had responsibility for the division-wide budget, personnel, assessment and professional development within the division. Sharon served as Associate Dean of Students at Menlo College, where she coordinated leadership development, community service, wellness, housing and student conduct. She held several positions in University Housing Services at SJSU including Associate Director of Organization & Planning; Associate Director of Facilities Operations; Assistant Director of Residential Life; and Resident Director. Sharon has taught three graduate courses at SJSU and presented on assessment and staff training at national conferences including the American College Personnel Association, the National Association of Student Personnel Administrators, and the Association of Fraternity Advisors. Sharon earned her doctorate in International & Multicultural Education from the University of San Francisco where her research focused on awareness of white racial identity and privilege. Her masters of arts degree is from Bowling Green State University in Higher Education & Student Affairs, and she earned her bachelors degree in Psychology from UC Davis.

Peter Deutsch

PETER DEUTSCH

Peter Deutsch is Senior Director of IT for the Division of Student Affairs. An early pioneer of the Internet, Mr. Deutsch specializes in developing large scale Internet-based applications and services. His notable career highlights include the establishment of the first Internet link into Canada (to McGill University in 1988), the creation of the first Internet search engine (Archie) and serving as founding co-chair of the Internet Engineering Task Force working group that defined the World Wide Web's URL format. Prior to joining San Jose State, he served as the Director of Networking and Systems and campus Information Security Officer at California State Polytechnic University-Pomona. He also held positions as Senior Engineering Director at Cisco Systems, Senior Director of Business Development at Lantronix Inc., and founder and President of one of the first successful Internet startups, Bunyip Information Systems Inc. of Montreal.

Mr. Deutsch holds a B.Sc. in Mathematics & Computer Science and a M.Sc. in Computer Science from McGill University.

Fernanda Perdomo A. Karp

FERNANDA PERDOMO A. KARP

Fernanda Perdomo A. Karp is the Director of Campus and Community Relations in the Division of Student Affairs. In this role she serves as central liaison to the campus community and external university partners for community partnerships, student access, and communications related to Student Affairs. In addition, Fernanda works closely with the Chancellor's Office, Public Affairs, University Advancement, Academic Affairs, Administration & Finance and other Student Affairs departments to develop partnerships designed to promote access and success for underrepresented, first generation and veteran student populations. She plans campus-wide events such as the Advancing Latino/a Success (ALAS) Conference, Super Sunday, Es El Momento Fair, and activities related to the CSU Journey to Success (JTS) projects like the Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Initiative. Monica Garcia

MONICA GARCIA

Monica Garcia began her career at San José State University in 1998 in the College of Humanities and the Arts. In 2002, she was promoted to Dean?s Assistant. She accepted the position of Assistant to the Provost in the Office of the Provost in 2005. In that position she provided administrative support to many campus-wide initiatives, committees and events.

Monica joined the Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs in January 2012. In her capacity as a Confidential Administrative Support, she deals primarily with personnel and student issues. She oversees the smooth day-to-day operations of the front office, provides primary support to the Vice President and serves as a liaison to the Student Affairs Leadership Team (SALT) and the Division as a whole. Monica serves on numerous Division and Campus-wide committees related to human resources, budget, and crisis assessment and intervention and assists with the planning of Division-wide events and meetings.

Monica received her Bachelor of Science in Health Science from San José State University and was recognized in 2008 as the College of Applied Sciences and Arts (CASA) Distinguished Alumna of the Year.
