First-Generation College Students

What Is a First-Generation College Student?

First-generation college students are those students who are in the first generation in their family to either 1) attend a four-year college/university or to 2) obtain a degree from a four-year college/university.

Some students whose family members earned degrees in other countries yet are the first in their family to attend or to obtain a degree from a four-year college/university in the United States also identify themselves as first-generation college students.
