Associated Students (A.S.) History
In 1897, Associated Students was founded to provide representation and services to
students at San José Teachers College. Since then, the organization has evolved from
a student club to a fully operational student government entity. Also, as an auxiliary
to the University, it provides services that allow students to enhance their college
Originally, voluntary fees were first collected in 1910 to provide services and activities. By 1957, all students were paying a portion of their registration fees to support their student government organization. Associated Students was incorporated in 1980, with the Student Council becoming the Corporation's Board of Directors.
Only You Can Make a Difference!
It's your turn! Associated Students is your Student Government. The incoming Board members become your voice at the table on important issues and challenges facing the student body at San José State. Our A.S. Student Government helps create a closer sense of community with increased student involvement and with continuing discussions about what is really important to and beneficial for students. We have worked with numerous people and organizations within the university to build up to what we expect to be a successful and spirited 2015 General Elections. The SEC would like to thank everyone involved in this process.
Lastly and most importantly, your vote counts! Last year's voter turn-out was 2,725 or 9.31% of the 29,258 eligible voters. This was the second highest turn-out in recent history. Is that good enough for you? If not, cast your vote between April 16–23 online at 1) as.sjsu.edu/vote, 2) my.sjsu.edu, or 3) visit any of our polling places. To participate in elections students must be matriculated at SJSU and have paid the most current A.S. Activities Fee. Continuing Education or Open University students are ineligible to vote. Together, let's build a stronger SJSU!
