What is WASC Accreditation?

SJSU is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC). WASC accredits public and private colleges and universities in the western states and Hawaii. (Separate agencies accredit community colleges and high schools.). Only accredited institutions may administer federal financial aid to their students.

At SJSU, a Steering Committee representative of the entire SJSU community oversees our accreditation. It consists of faculty, staff, students, administrators, and community members who contribute to, and review, our WASC Institutional report. Senate Resolution SS-S12-1 describes the Committee and how it is formed. The current roster of the Steering Committee is found at: Steering Committee Members. Members of the Steering Committee attend WASC trainings, workshops, WASC Academic Resource Conferences, and webinars. At these meetings, they learn about the WASC accreditation process, share the accomplishments of SJSU, and learn about the best practices from other institutions. Many of the materials from these workshops are available online.

The WASC accreditation process was recently revised and compressed. It now takes place over 18 months and requires only one on-site visit. The process is outlined in the WASC Handbook of Accreditation, which was finalized July 1, 2013. Three important dates for SJSU’s current re-accreditation cycle are:

August 20, 2014: The Institutional report was due to WASC.

November 12, 2014: WASC conducted an off-site review via web interface.

April 14–16, 2015: WASC team visits campus for its official
Accreditation Visit.

A.S. Spartan ShowcaseInaugural Spartan Showcase

Coinciding with the WASC Visit will be the first ever Associated Students SPARTAN SHOWCASE. This event will feature an exhibition by A.S.-funded SJSU recognized student organizations (RSOs). As part of the A.S. funding process during the academic year, if a student organization is funded by A.S., they must attend and exhibit at the Spartan Showcase. This is the perfect opportunity for the campus community, as well as the WASC visiting team, to see the great things that our student organizations are doing and the ways in which they are contributing to the academic mission of San José State University.
