Career Center

Exploring Careers Panel weblinkWhat Are You Going to Be When You Grow Up?

One of the biggest questions on students' minds is what they will do with their major following graduation. The Career Center hosts programs that help students explore that question with support from SJSU alumni.

Join us on April 7th for our Exploring Careers Panel. This event is appropriate for any student that is not quite sure what they want to do when they graduate. It may be especially helpful for first generation college students and students who are interested in learning how five alumni translated their SJSU education into meaningful careers. Read more about the panelists and help us promote this unique opportunity to students from all majors.

Our hope is that students will leave inspired and motivated, and with new ideas about what a career looks like and how to get there.

If you have any questions, please contact the program lead, Denise Hamilton, at denise.hamilton@sjsu.edu or at 408.924.6040.

Counseling & Psychological Services

Counseling and Psychological Services Staff

New Name

Counseling Services has been renamed the Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) department! We hope this new name will clarify our services so that students can more easily identify us. (And, "CAPS" so that we can help you achieve those caps and gowns, and be the best of who you already are!) This new name is also more consistent with other CA university counseling centers. Please visit our website for more information about our services: www.sjsu.edu/counseling/

New Location

We also are excited to announce our upcoming new location on the 3rd Floor of the brand new Student Wellness Center on the corner of 7th and San Carlos (across from the Event Center). CAPS operations will transition to that new location on Monday, June 8, so look out for that wonderful space where our professional counselors will continue to serve and help facilitate students' personal and educational growth and wellbeing!

Support for Finals

It's that time of the semester where students begin to feel the stress from all their midterms and assignments. Don't forget that CAPS Educational Counselors offer individual appointments to help with overcoming procrastination habits, improving your productivity and helping you better manage your stress for academic success. We also help students in academic crisis and coordinate with personal counseling to help students' overall well-being.

If you find that exams and deadlines are impacting your daily functioning (sleep, concentration, appetite, or relationships), make sure to see a personal counselor sooner than later.

CAPS staff members will continue to provide pertinent Spartan success (life skills) workshops and groups for all SJSU students. Sample topics include communications skills in challenging situations, healthy relationships in a multicultural context. With finals coming up, we have a few more stress management workshops, including those targeted for international and/or LGBTQQA students! Please visit our website to learn more.

Commencement Dinner and Celebration

Join us for a celebration of SJSU's graduating (Fall 2014 and Spring/Summer 2015) military and veteran students on Wednesday, May 13 from 4–6 p.m. on the Smith/Carlos Lawn (in front of Clark Hall). To learn more about all things "Veteran", please visit the department website.

Scholarship Awards Ceremony

Roughly twenty (20) student veterans (Fall and Spring combined) will be honored with receipt of their $1,000 scholarship on Wednesday, April 8 from 11:30am–1pm in MLK Library 225–229. This is an invite only event, and we will be providing a luncheon to honor these students and congratulate them on maintaining a GPA of 2.5 or above (depending on which grant) for undergraduates and a 3.25 for graduate students.

Student Health Center

COUGH Clean-Up Day

COUGH Organizes Cigarette Litter Clean-Up

An educational outreach and cigarette clean-up will be conducted on Thursday, April 16 from 4:00–5:00pm to inform our SJSU community about the impact of smoking and the President's Directive that SJSU will be a "Smoke Free and Tobacco Free Campus" as of August 1, 2015. This program is a collaboration between the Student Health Center and Campuses Organized and United for Good Health (COUGH). Our Peer Health Educators (PHEs) are seeking volunteers — please meet at the Event Center fountain at 4:00pm.
