Construction Updates

Check-Out Our New Digs

The division is pleased to provide the following updates on four key campus construction projects that will serve the campus and student body. All projects are managed under the auspices of Facilities Development and Operations (FD&O), but are guided by the work of the staff from the following departments: Student Union, Inc. (new Student Union and Recreation Center), Student Health Center and Counseling & Psychological Services (Student Wellness Center), and University Housing Services (Campus Village Phase II).

Campus Village Phase II

The new residence hall housing 850 students is on schedule to open in August 2016. It is located at the corner of 9th Street and Paseo de San Carlos. The building will also include common study rooms, lounges, multi-purpose room, recreation space, and other support spaces. It will be a 10-story high rise building.

Recreation Center

The Student Union staff, Associated Students, and Athletics Department worked with Facilities Development & Operations (FD&O) and an architectural design firm to create the budget and program for the new Recreation Center. The project will be approximately 120,000 sq.ft. and some of the proposed features include a roof top field with a running track, a recreational and a competitive pool, three basketball courts and a MAC court, several studios from small to large, separate aerobic rooms, free weights and selectorized fitness equipment.

The project is due to break ground in August 2016, following the opening of Campus Village Phase II and the demolition of Hoover and Royce Halls, and is scheduled for completion in December 2018.

Student Union Building

The renovated portion of the Student Union project is scheduled to open mid to late August of 2015. The Bowling Center initially was not included as part of the renovation other then seismic bracing and the necessary infrastructure. Due to the unforeseen extent of the demolition to the seismic bracing, it will be necessary to do other renovations to the Bowling Center, pushing the Bowling Center to now open for operation in Spring 2016.

The Student Union Board of Directors has chosen Thysse Designs as their branding design firm. Thysse will illustrate through the use of signage, graphics, logos, pictures and displays that this is a building built by students for students; the building represents the diversity of the university; and illustrates the history of the Student Union and the university.

Student Wellness Center

The new 3-story, 52,000 square foot Student Wellness Center is located on 7th Street and Paseo de San Carlos. The building houses the Student Health Center and Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS). Construction wrapped-up over Spring Break, and both departments are currently in the process of moving into their new space.
