SJSU Begins the 2015–16 Academic Year



The Division of Student Affairs has been busy getting us ready to welcome back more than 32,000 students for the 2015–16 academic year. Whether you are returning to SJSU, transferring from another institution, or just beginning your college journey, we have something for you! This year's festivities include annual traditions, like the Fall Welcome Days Kick-Off, Spartan Squad Kick-Off, Community Connections, Student Organizations Fair, and much more.

We are proud to partner with nearly 70 departments and offices, student organizations, and vendors to offer four weeks of exciting events and opportunities for the Spartan community. As you are returning to SJSU this academic year or beginning your journey at SJSU, we want to instill the ideas of community, civility, and paying it forward — early! Don't forget to Spartan It Forward at this year's events, but also throughout the academic year!

New Student Welcome Mixer (MOSAIC Cross-Cultural Center)

Are you brand new to SJSU and identify as Native American, African American, Asian American/Pacific Islander, Latin@/Chican@, and/or mixed? If so, you don’t want to miss this mixer. You will be introduced to campus resources and meet faculty, staff and current students who also identify with your community. Food will be provided and a chance to win fun raffle prizes will be awarded throughout the program. Come out and get connected!

Sweet Success (Accessible Education Center)

11:00am–2:00pm at the MLK Library, Rm 230: Center for Accessible Technology (CAT)

The Accessible Education Center (AEC) seeks to offer a one-of-a kind, fifth annual, Sweet Success: A meet and greet of AEC staff, services, and SJSU resources here to support students with disabilities. The Sweet Success event will provide students with an alternative media and assistive technology hands-on-tour, social gathering, and introduction to disability specific campus resources.

Meet and Greet for Interim President Martin (Office of the President)

12:00–1:00pm at the Student Union Ballroom

You are cordially invited to a campus welcome reception for Interim President Susan Martin, this Thursday, August 20 from 12–1 p.m. in the Student Union Ballroom. Academic Senate Chair Michael Kimbarow will make welcoming remarks and introduce Dr. Martin, who will greet and take questions from attendees. Light refreshments will be served.

Beyond Z Accelerator: “Survivor Mixer” (College of Engineering & College of Business)

3:00–5:00pm at the Boccardo Business Complex (BBC) 032

The Beyond Z Accelerator: "Survivor" Mixer is an opportunity for alumni, current, and future students to build community and participate in a series of desert survival simulation activities. The three 20-minute activities will foster teamwork, practice problem solving skills, and enhance their communication and design thinking skills. Afterwards, attendees will have the opportunity to mingle with other guests.

Target Night (Student Involvement)

10:00pm–12:00am at the 7th Street Plaza (meet to catch buses)

Need a few things? Join us at the Target on Coleman Avenue for a night of Spartan fun and shopping. Bus transportation will be provided from campus every 30 minutes from 10:00pm to midnight.

Residential Life Mixer (GENERATE: First-Generation College Students Program / MOSAIC Cross-Cultural Center)

Geared toward first-generation college students that live on campus, this event is focused on familiarizing students with resources, connecting them with other first-generation students, and peer advice from other students who are the first in their family to attend college. Explore creative learning experiences while enjoying a quick lunch. See some fun educational exhibits and posters created by students in courses that include study abroad, consulting for local community / multinational company, pitching an entrepreneurial venture, and a student management investment fund. Enjoy team and leadership activities and learn about exceptional interdisciplinary programs.

Black Student Welcome Event (African American/Black Task Force)

Introduction to SJSU for Black Students 101: A new student welcome event for frosh and transfer students to connect them with the Black community at SJSU and Santa Clara County. Food, fun and friends!

Surf's up! Come join Peer Connections for fun games and prizes! Learn more about balancing your time, taking notes, or how to get more involved on campus! Discover information about workshops, tutoring, mentoring, and other resources available from Peer Connections!

Crafty Times at the Library (University Library)

4:00–6:00pm at the MLK Library, 4th Floor

Drop by and hang out at one of two crafting sessions at the library. You will be able to choose from a variety of crafting options that will be a part of future events. The library will provide supplies, snacks and drinks to participants.

Barbershop Talk Series: Building a Community for Black Men (Counseling and Psychological Services and Peer Connections)

5:15–6:45pm at the Associated Students House, Fireside Room

The Barbershop Talk Series provides Black/African American males a safe-space to connect and build meaningful relationships with each other as well as other Black faculty and staff members.  At this event we will discuss the intricacies of being a Black/African-American male at SJSU and learn tips on how to successfully navigate this experience.

MOSAIC Open House (MOSAIC Cross-Cultural Center)

12:00–3:00pm at the MOSAIC Cross-Cultural Center, Modular A (between Hoover Hall & Aquatic Center)

The MOSAIC Cross Cultural Center invites all new and returning students, staff, faculty, and campus community members, to join us in Modular A to meet our staff, and learn about MOSAIC's services and programs for the fall semester.

Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer Welcome Reception (PRIDE Center)

12:00–3:00pm at the PRIDE Center, Modular B (between Hoover Hall & Aquatic Center)

This is your opportunity to meet and connect with people who are interested in learning about gender or looking to get involved with activism around gender issues at SJSU. CASA New Student Welcome Resource Fair (College of Applied Sciences and Arts Student Success Center and Dean’s Office)

3:00–4:30pm at the Associated Students (AS) Lawn

The College of Applied Sciences and Arts (CASA) New Student Welcome Resource Fair introduces frosh and transfers to CASA majors, the college faculty, staff, and administrators, and the academic support resources that facilitate academic and a smooth transition to the university.

Party Classy (Student Health Center and Wellness & Health Promotion)

3:00–4:00pm at the Student Wellness Center, Room 122A

Whether you choose to drink or not, alcohol may play a role in your college life. Party Classy provides some tips, tricks, and strategies for staying on the good side of alcohol if you choose to drink. So you say you don’t drink… no problem! Party Classy also provides the tools needed to educate your peers or to help out a friend who may have had a little too much to drink.

Honors Programs at SJSU – What’s it all about? (Humanities Honors Program)

3:30–5:30pm at 412 Clark Hall and 4th Floor Foyer

Thousands of students at SJSU qualify for honors programs, but most know nothing about them. This event explains the many varieties of honors at SJSU. Honors is not just about GPA – there’s so much more! Many honors opportunities will be represented – come for the information and some snacks.

Social Justice Barbeque and Movie Night (A.S. Cesar Chavez Community Action Center)

Healthy food options exist all around us… even right here on campus! Learn about the food option you have here at SJSU (both on and off campus) as well as proven strategies for making healthy choices.

Strengthening Spartans (Peer Connections & University Housing Services)

Come find out what you're already good at! StrengthsQuestTM teaches you how to use your strengths to better your personal, professional, and academic life. This event will introduce you to the basics of StrengthsQuest,TM and attendees will receive a free opportunity to assess their individual Strengths.

Career Center Open House (Career Center) 

1:30–4:30pm at the Administration Building (ADM), Rooms 154/255

Need a job or help choosing a major? Come to this event and learn how we can help you with things like exploring majors to landing your dream job. Need a part-time or on-campus job? Let us help! We will also have a photo booth set up for LinkedIn pictures!

Empowered Bystander: See Something. Say Something (Student Health Center, Wellness & Health Promotion)

2:00–3:00pm at the Student Wellness Center, Room 122A

As Spartans, we need to watch out for each other. The first step is knowing the difference between a bystander and an empowered bystander. This interactive presentation will allow you to walk away with concrete skills that you can use to positively intervene in potentially harmful situations. Practicing these skills will help build your confidence and encourage you to take action that will make our campus community a safer place for all.

“Come Together!” 5th Annual Family, Friends and First-Generation College Students Evening is a welcoming opportunity for students, their family and friends, and SJSU faculty/staff to enjoy good food, discuss the college experience, and increase sources of support for academic success for those who are first in their family to attend college.

During the fall semester, the National Pan-Hellenic Council will host their “2015 NPHC Week” from August 31–September 4, which will include a series of events that allow new students to not only actively engage and learn what Black Greek Life is all about, but to also meet and socialize with other students in the Black community.

As an opportunity to get involved at SJSU, the Fall Org Fair is a “must do” annual tradition. Organizations have a chance to recruit new members and showcase their activities, while students can explore ways to get involved and add more fun to their SJSU experience. The event is free and open to the entire SJSU student community! Don’t miss it!

CASA Student Success Center Open House (College of Applied Sciences and Arts)

3:00–4:00pm at the CASA Student Success Center, MacQuarrie Hall 533

The CASA Student Success Center invites you to an Open House to learn about our advising and academic support programs and services. Come and meet the staff and students, and discover the resources that will support your success. Fun, food, and prizes!

Stress Less for Success Fair (Counseling and Psychological Services)

3:00–5:00pm at the MLK Library, Meeting Rooms 225/229

College can be exciting but it can also be stressful because of all the different things students have to balance in their lives. Participate in several interactive stations to learn tips and train how you can Stress Less for Success. There will be free food and giveaways available!

The 12th Annual Community Connections Fair allows SJSU students, faculty and staff the opportunity to learn about services offered by non-profit organizations and ways in which they can volunteer and be involved in service-learning.

Fall in Love with Your Major! (Career Center)

12:00–2:00pm in the Student Union Ballroom

Not sure which major to declare? Considering changing your major? Attend this event to see what's offered at SJSU and learn more about different majors and career fields. Discover how different majors can prepare you for a variety of internships or jobs.

Interim President Susan Martin will deliver the Fall Welcome Address on Thursday, September 3, from 12–1 p.m. in the SU Ballroom. Refreshments will be served.

Spartan Squad Kick-Off (Associated Students)

3:00–6:00pm on Tower Lawn

The annual Spartan Squad Kick-off will be celebrating the first home football game of the 2015 season. Spartan Squad will be handing out their coveted Spartan Squad shirts along with some other great prizes!

Welcome to the College of Science – Open House (College of Science)

3:00–5:00pm on the Breezeway of Duncan Hall

The College of Science invites all science students to come enjoy free food and beverages and take this opportunity to meet faculty, staff, and other students in the College of Science. Information, resources, and services provided by the College of Science Advising Center as well as campus wide resources will be shared.

Campus Tailgate (Student Health Center-Wellness & Health Promotion)

4:00–7:00pm at the Campus Village Quad (Outside of Housing)

Join us for the Campus Tailgate in celebration of the first home football game! Come play some games with PHE, get your face painted blue and gold, and build your Spartan Pride. Find us in the Campus Village Quad for FREE FOOD and PRIZES. Go Spartans!

MOSAIC WORD! Open Mic Series Opener (MOSAIC Cross-Cultural Center)

The MOSAIC WORD! Open Mic Series features an array of different acts and talents.  MOSAIC invites everyone to join us and share your talents — whether through poetry, spoken word, music, dance, or any form of expression. Everyone is welcome to perform and/or participate!

Engage: New Student Leadership Experience (Student Involvement)

(Six Week Workshop Series – 9/4, 9/11, 9/18, 9/25, 10/2, 10/9)

Who is a leader? What does it mean to lead? The term leadership gets used all of the time, but have you ever stopped to think about what it actually means to you? Over the course of this seminar you will engage fully in an exploration about what YOU believe leadership to be. This interactive experience will give you greater awareness leadership as theory and practice. Open to all new students, no leadership experience required.
