female and male folklorico dancing at basketball game

Grupo Folklórico Luna y Sol de San José State performs at Warriors Game!

San José State's own Grupo Folklórico Luna y Sol had the honor of participating in the very first Latino Heritage Night for the World Champion Golden State Warriors on March 7.

SJSU's group was one of three Folklorico groups that performed at the game. The other two groups performed during pre-game and a quarter break, with SJSU performing last, during half time.

Grupo Folklórico Luna y Sol proudly represented SJSU in front of a sold-out crowd of over 20,000. The students performed two songs: La Bamba and El Son de la Negra.  In La Bamba, dancers tied a long ribbon into a bow using only their feet.  Three couples performed this dance with SJSU/Warrior colors of blue, yellow and white.  They followed this with the second song where five other couples performed using the group's SJSU colored traditional Jalisco costumes.

This performance was a milestone for Grupo Folklórico Luna y Sol, which received support from Associated Students with costuming. The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs and the Mexican American Studies department contributed to their success as well. Students now receive unit credit for their participation in this student group.

In addition to the milestone performance and experience of a lifetime, students came away with a limited edition Los Warriors T-shirt.  What's more, Grupo Folklórico Luna y Sol looks to continue to partner with the Golden State Warriors in the future and will work to expand opportunities to more SJSU students.

Grupo Folklórico Luna y Sol will host Noche Folklórica 2016 on Saturday, April 23 at 7 p.m. at Morris Dailey Auditorium. Special guest: Ballet Folklórico de James Logan High School. Everyone is welcomed!
