September 19th Student Union Ballroom 7:00 pm Election 2016 — Protest & Politics In the Age Of Twitter Spartan Speaker Series SJSU STUDENT AFFAIRS VAN JONES FREE

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Spartan Speaker Series - Van Jones Comes to Campus on Sept. 19!

The Office of the Vice President for Student Affairs is proud to announce the launch of the Spartan Speaker Series with an “Evening with Van Jones” at 7. p.m. on Monday, Sept. 19 in the Student Union Ballroom.

Mr. Jones is a civil rights leader, former Obama White House advisor, and CNN political correspondent. A Yale-educated attorney, Mr. Jones has written two New York Times bestsellers: "The Green Collar Economy," the definitive book on green jobs, and "Rebuild the Dream," a roadmap for progressives. He is the Founder and President of Dream Corps - an incubator, platform and home for world-changing initiatives that empower the most vulnerable in our society. The Dream Corps three programs (#cut50, #YesWeCode, and Green For All) work to close prison doors and open doors of opportunity.

Our next speaker is Jose Antonio Vargas, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, filmmaker and media publisher whose work centers on the changing American identity. He is the founder and CEO of Define American, a nonprofit media and culture organization that seeks to elevate the conversation around immigration and citizenship in America; and the founder, CEO, editor and publisher of #EmergingUS, a digital platform that lives at the intersection of race, immigration, and identity in a multicultural America. #EmergingUS is the first-ever media property owned by an undocumented immigrant. Mr. Vargas is hosted by the A.S. Cesar Chavez Community Action Center as part of Legacy Week. The event will be held at 7 p.m. on Oct. 10 in the Student Union Ballroom.

Our final speaker for the fall semester is Matika Wilbur, one of the Pacific Northwest’s leading photographers, a Native American woman of the Swinomish and Tulalip Tribes (Washington), who is unique as an artist and social documentarian in Indian Country. Ms. Wilbur is currently working on Project 562, a national documentary project dedicated to photographing contemporary Native America. Ms. Wilbur will be on campus at 7 p.m. on Nov. 15 in the Student Union Theater.
