Volunteers with food

SJSU has partnered with Second Harvest Food Bank to offer mobile food pantries each month to provide another food resource to our students. To date we have held five “Just In Time” mobile food pantries since October. We have approximately 600 students who come through the mobile food pantry. While items can vary, depending on what is available, students typically receive fresh produce, milk, eggs, frozen chicken, tuna, pasta, beans, rice, cereal, tortillas and canned vegetables.

The mobile food pantries are held the second Monday of the month from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. in the Event Center. To be eligible to participate, students must be currently enrolled at SJSU and meet the income requirements set forth by Second Harvest, which include $23,760 in annual income for a household size of one and varies for households of larger sizes. Students must sign in to confirm they meet this income requirement.

The Student Union, Inc donates the use of the Event Center to this important effort, and Event Center staff are key to set up. In addition, over 50 student, staff, faculty and community volunteers ensure the food is ready to go when we open the doors. Set up begins at 8 a.m. with clean up taking place until approximately 1 p.m.

Our next mobile food pantry will be on Monday, March 13 from 10 a.m. to 11:15 a.m. in the Event Center.

In addition to Just In Time, Student Affairs and Second Harvest Food Bank have also partnered up to offer CalFresh sign-ups several hours during the week for the entirety of the Spring semester. Students have several options to get support signing-up:

  • Student Involvement Lounge on 1st and 3rd Tuesdays from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.
  • Financial Aid and Scholarship Office on Tuesdays from 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.
