City Facts

Dublin, Ireland

Dublin is the capital, principle port, and trading center of the Republic of Ireland. With it’s broad avenues and stately squares, Dublin is the home to the National Museum, National Gallery, Abbey Theatre, Dublin Castle, and St. Patrick’s Cathedral, named after the patron saint of Ireland. Dublin’s history is both tragic and inspirational. Captured by the Danes in the 9th century, the Irish wrestled for control over Dublin three times over the next century before they were expelled by the Anglo-Normans in 1171, led by King Henry II of England. England’s rule over Dublin remained unchallenged until 1543, when Irish patriots rebelled against them for the first time. Centuries of rebellion and revolts followed, finally ending in 1922 with the establishment of the Irish Free State.

Campus Facts

University College Dublin

Founded in 1851 as the Catholic University of Ireland, University College Dublin was incorporated as a constituent college of the National University of Ireland in 1908. Its main campus is now located in Belfield, about 8 miles south of the city center. Having moved to this location in the 1960s, UCD is a modern, constantly growing campus, which is currently engaged in an extensive phase of physical development. With ten faculties and over eighty departments, UCD is now the largest university in Ireland. It has 22,000 students, of which 2,000 are international. University College Dublin is commonly considered one of the top universities in Europe.

Eligibility Requirements

Students must:

  • be enrolled as an SJSU student for one semester prior to departure, or be a California community college student eligible to enter SJSU by the semester of departure,
  • have Sophomore, Junior or Senior standing by the semester of departure,
  • have completed lower division requirements,
  • have a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Academic Program

The academic calendar consists of two 15-week semesters: 12 week of instruction, 1 week of revision, and 2 weeks for examinations. SJSU students must take 40–60 UCD credits (equal to 12–18 SJSU units). In addition to choosing the right credit load, students are required to take modules (courses) at the right level. Students will be expected to choose the appropriate level for their degree and provide academic evidence for any modules that require pre-requisites. Units and grading will be translated to SJSU equivalencies upon return from the program. At UCD there is a strong reliance on personal learning and initiative. Classes are student-centered and participants are encouraged to voice opinions in group work and seminars. Assessments are specific to subject areas but can include essays, examinations, and course work. For some courses, 70–100% of the assessment may be based on the final examination.
