Admitted Spring 2018 and Prior

SJSU EXPECTATIONS FOR COMPLETION IN WRITTEN COMMUNICATION AND QUANTITATIVE REASONING

SPRING 2018 AND PRIOR

Students who enrolled as first-year frosh in Spring 2018 or earlier fall under the authority of Executive Order 665, which states that students entering San Jose State University with a remedial requirement in mathematics or writing must complete remediation within their first academic year; those who do not will be withdrawn from the university.

However, in an effort to provide students who did not complete remediation in the allowed year with options that are better aligned to the current completion policy, students who are still in UGRM (undergraduate remedial) status at the end of the 2017-18 academic year must do one of the following to clear remediation:

Admitted and Enrolled Fall 2017

  1. MATHEMATICS/QUANTITATIVE REASONING: Enroll in an Intermediate Algebra or GE Area B4 quantitative reasoning course at a community college during Summer 2018 and earn a grade of C- or better. The B4 course in question should be aligned with the student’s major. Once the course is over, an official transcript must be sent to SJSU and an unofficial copy must be emailed to supportedinstruction@sjsu.edu. If you earn a grade of D or lower, you must enroll in an appropriate SJSU B4 course with supported instruction in Fall 2018.
  1. Purchase an ALEKS PPL license, review math content in the modules, and take a proctored exam no later than August 1, 2018. If you earn a score of 55 or better on the exam, you will clear remediation. If you score less than 55, you must enroll in an appropriate SJSU B4 course with supported instruction in Fall 2018. Contact the Testing Office for details (testing-office@sjsu.edu).
  2. Take the CLEP exam for College Algebra, College Math, or Pre-Calculus. The total cost is approximately $110.  A score of 50 or above will satisfy your remediation requirement and GE Area B4. Note that if you are in a major that requires Calculus, you will need to complete additional math courses. If you score less than 50, you must enroll in an appropriate SJSU B4 course with supported instruction in Fall 2018. Contact the Testing Office for details (testing-office@sjsu.edu).
  3. Enroll in an appropriate SJSU quantitative reasoning course (B4) with supported instruction in Fall 2018. Students who choose this option will be placed on  administrative academic probation during the fall semester. Completion of the course with a C- or better will satisfy your remediation requirement and GE Area B4. Students who do not complete their quantitative reasoning general education requirement by the end of Fall 2018 will be withdrawn from the university before the Spring 2019 term under administrative academic disqualification.

WRITTEN COMMUNICATION

  1. Enroll in a written communication (A2) course at a community college during Summer 2018 and earn a grade of C- or better. Once the course is over, an official transcript must be sent to SJSU and an unofficial copy must be emailed to supportedinstruction@sjsu.edu. If you earn a grade of D or lower, you must enroll in ENGL 1A at SJSU in Fall 2018.
  2. Enroll in English 1A at SJSU in Fall 2018. Students who choose this option will be placed  on administrative academic probation during the fall semester. Completion of the course with a C- or better will satisfy your remediation requirement and GE Area A2. Students who do not complete their written communication (A2) general education requirement by the end of Fall 2018 will be withdrawn from the university before the Spring 2019 term under administrative academic disqualification.

If you did not complete remediation in Spring 2018, you must inform Supported Instruction of which option you choose by using this form. The deadline for completing this form is June 11, 2018.

You have a June 15th deadline to register for an appropriate SJSU Fall 2018 quantitative reasoning or written communication course or to provide proof that you are pursuing one of the other options outlined above. Proof must be sent by email to supportedinstruction@sjsu.edu. If you fail to register for an appropriate course or fail to provide proof by June 15th, all of your Fall 2018 courses will be dropped.
