It's still not too late to estimate your ecological footprint, here, as a starting place to inform yourself.
As part of the University’s sustainability initiative, we invited all students, faculty, and staff to join us in measuring our individual ecological footprints and taking steps to reduce our collective footprint by 10% over the 2009/2010 academic year. During the first phase of the challenge between October 1 until November 6th, over 2700 participants registered through this website and completed a short survey that calculated and recorded the consumption habits based on their daily lifestyles. This campaign is a unique, in that no such measurements have been gathered throughout a college community and over time, so far as we are aware.
From March 1 to April 9, 2010 all Fall participants were encouraged to return to the site to update their footprint data, comparing rates in resource consumption. Our Grand Prize winners are the individual student, faculty, and staff in comparison with their peers who have achieved a provable lowest absolute footprint, as well as those who have reduced their Autumn footprints by the greatest percentage - what we affectionately refer to as "Biggest Loser"!
More details can be found at the SJSU Ecological Footprint Challenge website.

Thursday, May 13th, 12-1:30pm
Engineering Bldg, Room 285
(Note New Location!)
(Organic and locally-sourced tasting plates of food will be served-bring your reusable containers for leftovers!)
At this event we will announce the winners of this year’s Ecological Footprint Challenge, and present the results of our preliminary data analysis. Additionally, we would like to hear from you on how we can improve the workshop series next year.
We will also break up into small groups to discuss the impact of the workshop series in light of its three main goals: 1) to educate attendees on contemporary sustainability topics; 2) to energize them to take action, and 3) to provide attendees with mechanisms for engaging in action at the personal or organizational level to reduce their personal ecological footprint or help SJSU reduce its impact on natural resource use.
Our event will be facilitated by Katherine Cushing, Director of Sustainability, Matt Lambert, M.S. candidate in the Environmental Studies Department, and you (by taking an active role in small group discussions we will have from 12:30-1:00).
As National Director of Sustainability, Institutional & Corporate Services at CB Richard Ellis, Dave Pogue is responsible for the leadership of the firm’s sustainability programs for the property and facilities management portfolio across the Americas. Mr. Pogue manages the development, introduction, and implementation of a wide-ranging platform of sustainable practices and policies, working closely with Facilities Management, Project Management, Global Corporate Services and Asset Services to focus on achieving a consistent balance of maximum financial performance and responsible environmental stewardship.
Mr. Pogue’s efforts have led to the introduction of CBRE’s Sensible Sustainability program, which includes aggressive endorsement of the Environmental Protection Agency’s ENERGY STAR ® program, introduction of the CBRE Green Knights, a partnership with BOMA International for the company-wide delivery of BOMA BEEP training, and a corporate association with the US Green Building Council. These programs have earned CBRE recognition by the EPA as a three-time ENERGY STAR Partner of the Year, by the USGBC with its Leadership Award for Organizational Excellence, and by CoreNet with a special award for sustainable practices. CBRE was also ranked among the top 50 greenest companies in the United States by Newsweek magazine.
