Meet the Board of Directors

Community Members

Laurence "Larry" Boucher, B.S. Industrial Management '69, M.B.A. '70
Larry Boucher founded Alacritech in 1997 and has since served as its president and CEO. He is a member of the American National Standards Institute and the Institute for Electrical and Electronic Engineers. In addition to two degrees from SJSU, he has a master's in electrical engineering from UC Berkeley. Boucher and his wife, Anna, live in Saratoga, Calif.

boycePhillip R. "Phil" Boyce, B.A. Business Administration '66
Phil Boyce is president of Boyce & Associates. He is also on the Board of Directors of EDC Biosystems and on the advisory board of Sandhill Capital. Mr. Boyce is a member of the SJSU College of Business Advisory Board. He and his wife, Susan, B.S. Sociology '65, live in Saratoga and have a daughter, Sharon. The Boyces are involved with a number of charitable entities, including the Valley Foundation, Silicon Valley Children's Fund and the Hakone Foundation. Boyce received the Tower Award in 1997 and was chairman of the Heritage Gateway Campaign.

Stephen "Steve" Caplan, B.S. Industrial Management '65
Steve Caplan recently retired as president of KBM Office Furniture, a company he joined while a senior in college and purchased in 1984. Since that time, the company has grown from a small, local dealership to a large company doing business throughout the United States, Canada and Mexico. Caplan and his wife, Cheryl, live in Los Gatos and Lake Tahoe. He has been involved with such organizations as The Health Trust, YMCA of Santa Clara Valley, KTEH and Rotary.

Wai-Yan "Sandy" Chau
Sandy Chau is president of Trident USA, a diversified holding company that invests in real estate and provides venture capital throughout China and the U.S. He also serves as president and CEO of the Shin Shin Education Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to building schools in remote, rural areas of China. Chau serves on numerous private and non-profit boards in the bay area. He is a member of the SJSU Charles W. Davidson College of Engineering Global Technology Initiative Team and advises Dean Belle Wei on issues related to global technology. Born in Shanghai, Chau graduated from UC Berkeley in 1972 with a degree in chemical engineering. Chau is married with two children and resides in Burlingame.

Jeff Clarke
Jeff Clarke was appointed president and CEO of KQED Public Broadcasting in June 2002. A Wisconsin native, Clarke has a broadcasting career that spans 38 years. Prior to joining KQED, Clarke spent twelve years in Houston, Texas, where he was CEO and general manager of Houston PBS/KUHT. Clarke is currently a member of the PBS board of directors, serves as a governor of the Commonwealth Club of California, as a trustee of the World Affairs Council of Northern California and as a member of the Asia Society Advisory Board. Clarke graduated from University of North Carolina at Greensboro with a bachelor's degree in radio, television and film. He earned a master's in communication arts with an emphasis in film from the University of Wisconsin. Clarke and his spouse, Gail, have a daughter, Melissa, and live in Mill Valley.

davidsonCharles W. "Chuck" Davidson, B.S. Civil Engineering '57
Chuck Davidson is president of Charles W. Davidson Company, as well as several other companies all engaged in civil engineering and construction. He was awarded the College of Engineering Award of Distinction in 2001 and the Tower Award in 2004. An avid fan of Spartan Football, Davidson has attended nearly every game since 1952. He and his wife, Anita, B.A. Education '51, live in San José and have four grown children. Davidson has been a generous supporter of SJSU and in March 2007 made a gift of $15 million to the College of Engineering, SJSU's largest gift.

Dana C. Ditmore
After retiring from Applied Materials, Dana Ditmore became president of Oak Valley Consulting, Inc. He has held leadership roles in many companies, serving as president and COO of Tru-Si Technologies, VP for Lam Research, VP for Applied Materials' Customer Service Division, and various senior positions with General Electric. Ditmore holds bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering from UC Berkeley and graduated from the G.E. Advanced Engineering Training Program. He has served as chairman of the Santa Clara Valley Chapter of the National Society of Professional Engineers and as chairman of the Industry Advisory Council for the San José State University Charles W. Davidson College of Engineering. Ditmore and his wife, Elaine, live in San Martin.

francisLeslie C. "Les" Francis, B.A. Social Science '65
Les Francis is executive vice president of Goddard Claussen Strategic Advocacy, one of America's most successful public affairs and issue advocacy firms. He is the former chief of staff to then Representative and now U.S. Transportation Secretary Norman Mineta. He served as deputy assistant and deputy chief of staff to President Jimmy Carter. He is a former executive director of both the Democratic National Committee and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. Francis and his wife, Shari, live in Washington D.C. and have three grown children and several grandchildren.

John Gibbs, B.A. '83 Political Science, M.P.A. '90
President of the SJSU Alumni Association, Gibbs has two degrees in political science from San José State. He has a law degree '86 from Willamette University and is the chief of staff for Santa Clara County Supervisor Don Gage. Over the past 15 years, Gibbs has served as a political aide and consultant to candidates for the Board of Supervisors, City Council, and on campaigns for transportation, library and park measures. Gibbs and his wife, Alison, live in San José and have two daughters.

Wanda Ginner, B.A. Business '68
Wanda Ginner is a semi-retired CPA/consultant. A longtime supporter of the College of Business, she works closely with the business plan competition and is a member of the SJSU Exceptional Women Executives, Distinguished Women Alumnae, and the SJSU Heritage Society. Ginner still practices accounting on a part-time basis after merging with Burr, Pilger and Mayer in 1999, following several decades as the head of her own independent CPA firm. Ginner and her husband, Lance, live in Portola Valley.

hendrix_talleyWanda Hendrix-Talley, B.A. Sociology '77, M.P.A. '94
Wanda Hendrix-Talley is Treasury Manager with the East Bay Municipal Utilities District. A longtime supporter of the Spartan Foundation, Hendrix-Talley is also a member of the SJSU Alumni Association Board of Directors and is the immediate-past president. Hendrix-Talley lives in Milpitas and is involved with many organizations in the community.

jimenezJames "Jim" Jimenez, B.S. Business/Industrial Management, M.A. Education '75
Jim Jimenez is co-founder of Kelley Transportation Services and Bay Cities Leasing, which he sold to GE Capital Services in 1998. He lives with his wife, Margaret, in Los Altos and Pebble Beach. They have two sons, both of whom attended University of Southern California. Jimenez taught high school for four years, and then worked for several companies including IBM prior to founding Kelley Transportation. In 2005, he and his wife hosted a Cypress Spring Quartet event at the Monterey Peninsula Country Club, where they are members.

Gary Kalbach, M.B.A. '66
Gary Kalbach Gary Kalbach is founding partner of El Dorado Ventures, a venture capital company in Menlo Park. He founded the firm in 1986 and has since served on the boards of more than 40 technology start-ups. Prior to launching El Dorado, Kalbach served as the general partner of West Coast Venture Capital, a venture capital fund formed in 1978 that played a key role in the development of the technology sector. Kalbach was one of the first high-tech lenders with Wells Fargo Bank in the late 1960s. He has served on the board of several influential non-profits, such as the Ronald McDonald House, the Lucille Packard Children's Hospital and the Los Altos Golf and Country Club. He and his wife, Sherron, have homes in Los Altos and Palm Desert. Kalbach has a bachelor's degree from UC Berkeley and an M.B.A. from San José State University.

lucasDonald L. "Don" Lucas, B.S. Marketing '59
Donald Lucas is founder of the Lucas Dealership Group, one of the first multiple franchise automobile companies in the country. From 1964 to 2000, Lucas owned more than 40 different dealerships in San Francisco, Santa Clara, Monterey and Hawaii. He currently heads Lucas Trust Ventures, which oversees his real estate and private investment holdings. He and his wife, Sally, B.A. Education '57, live in their homes in Pebble Beach, Los Gatos and Hawaii. In 2006, the Lucases made a $10 million donation to establish the Donald and Sally Lucas Graduate School of Business.

Constance MooreConstance B. Moore, B.S. Business '77
With 30 years of experience in the real estate industry, Constance Moore assumed the role of BRE's president and CEO in 2005 and serves on the company's board of directors. Prior to joining BRE in 2002, she was the managing director of Security Capital Group & Affiliates. From 1993 to 2002, Moore held executive positions with Security Capital Group, including co-chairman and COO of Archstone Communities Trust. Moore holds an M.B.A. from UC Berkeley's Haas School of Business, and a bachelor's degree from SJSU. She is a member of the National Association of Real Estate Investment Trusts' Board of Governors, the Fisher Center for Real Estate & Urban Economics Policy Board Executive Committee, the Urban Land Institute, and the California Housing Council. Moore and her husband, Roger Greer, live in San Francisco.

Edward A. Oates, B.S. Math/Computer Science '68
Edward Oates is one of the founders of Oracle Corporation, along with Larry Ellison and Bob Miner. He served as Oracle's vice president until 1994, when he retired. Oates has been a strong supporter of and guest speaker in the SJSU College of Science. He is on the board of the San Francisco Zoological Society and plays guitar in a band with four friends – three of whom are SJSU alumni. Oate's mother is also a graduate of SJSU. He and his wife, Jennifer Hammer, live in Portola Valley and have three children.

pinsonJay Pinson, SJSU Emeritus Dean, College of Engineering
Jay Pinson has been a leader and friend to SJSU since the late 1970s. Pinson is currently president of LifeLine Technologies, a company focused on developing and marketing products for homeland security and safety. Previously, he was president and founder of the Pinson Institute, a consultant and contractor to industry and government in the areas of technology, business and workforce development. Pinson was dean of the College of Engineering at SJSU from 1979 to 1994, and was instrumental in developing SJSU's high quality engineering program. He is also a trustee of The Health Trust and an active participant in other community organizations. He and his wife, Eleanore, live in San José.

P. Anthony "Tony" Ridder
Director of the McClatchy Company, P. Anthony Ridder is the former president, CEO and chairman of Knight Ridder, and former publisher of the San Jose Mercury News. Originally from Minnesota, Ridder is a strong proponent of Bay Area arts and education. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Across the Bridge Foundation and The Tech Museum of Innovation, and is a former trustee of Santa Clara University. He has a bachelor's degree in economics from University of Michigan. Ridder and his wife, Constance "Connie," live in San Francisco.

sbonaGary J. Sbona, B.S. Business Administration '66
Gary J. Sbona is chairman/CEO/owner of Regent Pacific Management Corporation, an international firm that specializes in the recovery and restructuring of underperforming companies. Sbona founded the company in 1974. He and his wife, Mary, live in San Francisco. Sbona is also a member of the KTEH Board of Trustees and an active participant in other community organizations.

Peter V. Ueberroth, B.S. Business Administration/Management '59
Best known for his roles as Major League Baseball commissioner and United States Olympic Committee director, Peter Ueberroth is currently the president of Contrarian Group, an investment and financial consulting firm. He is on the board of the Cancer Research Fund and is a life trustee of the University of Southern California. Ueberroth received his bachelor's degree in business administration from SJSU, holds honorary degrees from Notre Dame, Ohio, Holy Cross and Lafayette Universities, and University of Southern California, and was Time Magazine Man of the Year in 1984. He and his wife, Virginia, '59, live in Laguna Beach.

David Wasick, B.A. Behavioral Sciences '75
David Wasick is a civil attorney with the law firm of Beckley Singleton in Reno and Las Vegas, Nevada, and also serves as a Nevada Supreme Court settlement judge. He has held positions as special assistant attorney general for the state of Nevada, administrative counsel to the Nevada Supreme Court and counsel to the chief justice of the Nevada Supreme Court, and deputy district attorney, Douglas County, Nevada. A member of the SJSU Football Hall of Fame, Wasick was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in the sixth round of the 1975 draft and was later with the New York Jets, New England Patriots, and retired from the San Francisco 49ers in 1979. He coached college football until 1982 at San José State, Boise State and UC Davis. Wasick and his wife, Dr. Carol Coats, live in Minden, Nev.

Jon Whitmore, President
Jon Whitmore joined San José State University on August 1, 2008 as its new president. Prior to joining SJSU, Whitmore served as president of Texas Tech University since 2003. From 1996 to 2003, Whitmore served as provost and professor of theatre arts at the University of Iowa, and was dean, College of Fine Arts at the University of Texas at Austin from 1990 to 1996. Whitmore was also dean of the Faculty of Arts and Letters at the State University of New York at Buffalo from 1985 to 1990, where he was a professor of theatre. Whitmore was affiliated with West Virginia University from 1974 to 1985, where he served as interim dean for the College of Creative Arts, interim director of the Creative Arts Center, faculty member, and as assistant to the president. He received his doctorate in theatre history from the UC Santa Barbara, and both his bachelor's and master's degrees in speech from Washington State University. Whitmore and his wife, Jennifer, now live in San José and have a son and a daughter.

Fred Najjar, Vice President University Advancement
Fred Najjar is the vice president for University Advancement where he is responsible for alumni relations, development, Tower Foundation and public affairs. He joined SJSU in 1989 serving as director of Housing and executive assistant to the VP for Student Affairs. He joined Advancement in 2000, as executive director of the alumni association and AVP for Alumni Affairs. Najjar was named AVP for development and alumni relations in 2004. Prior to coming to SJSU, he was director of Residential and Greek Life at Arizona State, and director of Residence Halls at the University of Wisconsin. He holds a bachelor's in public administration and a master's in counseling and student personnel from Virginia Tech. He is working on his doctorate in organization and leadership at University of San Francisco. Najjar lives in San Francisco.

siglerCarmen Sigler, Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs
Provost Carmen Sigler was born and raised in Argentina. She received master's and doctoral degrees in romance languages and literatures from the University of Michigan. Sigler has published books and scholarly articles on Renaissance Spanish literature in Spain, Argentina and the United States. Sigler joined the faculty of San José State's Department of Foreign Languages in 1987 and became dean of the College of Humanities and the Arts in 1998. In November 2004, she was appointed interim provost and vice president for Academic Affairs and in August 2005 was appointed permanent provost, overseeing seven colleges, the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, Undergraduate Studies, Graduate Studies and Research, International Studies, Faculty Affairs, Academic Technology, and the Research Foundation. She and her husband, Rob, live in Cupertino and have one daughter.

Rose Lee, Vice President, Administration and Finance
Rose Lee earned her bachelor's in history from UC Berkeley and holds a California Standard Secondary Teaching Credential. She also earned an M.B.A. from the University of Santa Clara. She has been with San José State since 1981, first, as financial assistant to the business director, then, in 1984 as director of budgets and analysis, and, in 1995 as associate vice president for financial and administrative program planning. Beginning in 2002, she served as associate vice president for administrative systems and finance in the Division of Administration and Finance, and in September 2004, she served as interim vice president for Administration and Finance. In August 2005, she was appointed vice president for Administration and Finance for a term extending through June 30, 2008. Lee and her husband, Gil, live in San José and have two daughters.

bowenTom Bowen, Athletic Director
Tom Bowen joined SJSU as athletic director in 2004. He previously served as the San Francisco 49ers director of community affairs and executive director of the 49ers Foundation. Bowen is a 1983 graduate of the University of Notre Dame and also served in athletic administration at UC Berkeley and St. Mary's College. As an assistant and associate director of athletics at UC Berkeley from July 2000 through September 2002, he was responsible for all athletic fundraising. Credited with developing the first comprehensive planned giving program for the Golden Bears, the Athletic Annual Fund realized a $2.7 million increase in donations and contributions during his two years at the Pacific-10 Conference university. Bowen and his wife, Mia, live in Danville and have three children.

najjarFred Najjar, vice president, University Advancement
Fred Najjar is the vice president for University Advancement. In this position, Najjar oversees alumni relations, development, advancement operations, and marketing and communications. Najjar joined SJSU in 1989, serving as director of Housing Services and as executive assistant to the vice president for the Division of Student Affairs. He joined University Advancement in 2000, as executive director of the alumni association and associate vice president for Alumni Affairs. He was named associate vice president for development and alumni relations in 2004 and served in that role until his current appointment. Prior to coming to SJSU, Najjar was director of Residential and Greek Life at Arizona State University; and director of Residence Halls Administration at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. He holds a bachelor's degree in Public Administration and master's degree in Counseling and Student Personnel from Virginia Tech. He is currently working on his doctorate in Organization and Leadership at the USF.

bussaniNancy Bussani, Chief Operating Officer and Associate VP Advancement Operations
Nancy Bussani was named chief operating officer of the newly created Tower Foundation in March 2005. Prior to this position, she was executive director of the Metropolitan Technology Center, overseeing SJSU's joint programs with NASA at Moffett Field. From 1999 to 2001 she served as the president and CEO of the Mountain Winery in Saratoga, Calif., and from 1996 to 1999 she served as the president of Manex, a nonprofit consulting company for small manufacturers. Bussani worked with the SJSU Research Foundation, serving as the director of contracts and grants from 1987 to 1996. She has taught on the adjunct faculty in the SJSU College of Business and has been an active grant writer in the community for many years. She holds a bachelor's in accounting from the University of Idaho and an M.B.A. from Washington State University. Bussani and her husband, Jon, live in Pleasanton and have three children.
