The importance of education

It's true what they say--when life hands you lemons you make lemonade. Scholarship recipients Shasta Ott and Dylan Buckingham did exactly that when it came to overcoming obstacles in funding their education.

Shasta faced adversity head on, realizing at an early age that challenging herself in the classroom was the best way she could make a better life for herself. And so at twelve years old, Shasta began her college career, attending classes at local junior colleges while at junior high and high school. By the time she started at SJSU, Shasta had almost 50 transferable units. At age 19, Shasta began the Fall 2006 semester as a junior.

dylanDylan, also a junior, came to SJSU after working several years as a charter boat deckhand. He returned to the classroom to study nursing and has maintained a 4.0 GPA.

He has been accepted to the School of Nursing’s accelerated program for outstanding academic achievement and anticipates completion of his BS in Nursing by December 2007.

Shasta and Dylan’s ability to attend San José State is due to the SJSU endowment. The scholarships relieve financial pressure and in turn allow them time to give back to the community. Shasta tutors English, has helped at Freshmen Orientation and also works to promote an alcohol and drug-free campus; Dylan volunteers at the Second Harvest Food Bank and volunteers as an emergency medical technician while continuing to work at community events to save the Salinas City Library.

As part of their scholarship award, both Shasta and Dylan have received support from the C & L Burmahln Endowment. Shasta and Dylan are grateful for these scholarships, enabling them to complete their studies at San José State University, realizing the importance of education to their future success.
