History of the Tower Award

LaTorre (The Tower) is the oldest building on campus and the symbolic heart of the university. The Tower Award is presented to alumni, faculty, and community leaders as the highest recognition of service to San José State University. Recipients are selected by the board of directors of the Tower Foundation.

The award itself is a specially commissioned medallion finely cast in bronze. The obverse bears the San José State University Tower Seal in deep relief. Upon the case is engraved the recipient’s name and year of presentation. The 2 ½-inch diameter medallion is suspended from a silk neck ribbon and presented in a hand-rubbed walnut case lined with velvet. The medallion ribbon and presentation case lining combine the university colors of gold, white, and blue.

To the colors gold and white Professor Henry Meade Bland, California poet laureate from 1929 to 1931, ascribed such traits as high aspirations and steadfastness. Loyalty is traditionally represented by blue. The qualities of character each color represents are embodied in the lives of Tower Award recipients.
